As we approach the end of the first calendar quarter of 2023, we are proud to share our recent successes and highlight our plans for the coming months.
The Department of Foreign Affair’s new Australian Development policy is expected to have a significant impact on the future of global health research in the Asia Pacific region. We participated in a series of roundtable discussions from Australia and the region which were held late 2022. Our optimism the new policy would result in increased support for research initiatives aligned with the Institute’s focus appears to be well founded, with new opportunities in progress. The policy is expected to be finalised in the first half of 2023.
Our passports are off the shelf and teams are back in the field, eager to reconnect with our international partners. While we managed to make significant impacts during the during restricted travel periods, the benefits of in-person conversations can't be fully replicated virtually.
To progress our work as Systems Thinkers, we have added new activities to our portfolio including: providing an overview of care service provision in six south Asian countries with Asia Development Bank; and an economic analysis of One Health implementation in Central Asia for World Bank.
Sharing our knowledge helps grow the impact of our work in addressing global challenges and informs global health decision-making. Our researchers published almost 100 papers in 2022; and in 2023 we have already published around 23. We will continue to collaborate with our international colleagues and produce world class applied research in global health and promoting sustainable solutions to improve health outcomes for people around the world In 2023, and we are continuing to invest in our people.
We are progressing a number of organisational initiatives to strengthen our platform for delivering services to communities, including new collaboration tools.
Thanks for joining us as we work to build stronger, equitable health systems across Asia Pacific.
Happy reading and stay well.

Why do some people with chronic illnesses quit treatment?
Why do some patients discontinue treatment?
We worked with colleagues from University of Melbourne and Umm Al-Qura University to better understand why some patients quit treatment. Our results show it is essential to make chronic disease services responsive to patients' legitimate expectations.
Dr Shazra Abbas discusses her findings on the importance of a Responsive Health System to patient outcomes.

The Nossal Institute has partnered with Sentra Advokasi Perempuan Difabel dan Anak (SAPDA), an OPD from Indonesia, to produce a series of digital stories about the impacts of stigma on people with disabilities.
