Del Rio Trail Project

The Del Rio Trail is a five-mile abandoned railway corridor in Sacramento, west of Freeport Boulevard from Sutterville Road to Pocket Road, that is being converted into an art-activated, multi-use trail and park.

I’ve been hired by the City of Sacramento, to make art about the trail. I will design a Trail Badge for each of the 6 neighborhoods along the trail’s path using input from you! These badges will become stickers, stamps, patches and more and given away to trail users. Please share your thoughts and impressions about the one or more sections of the Del Rio Trail.

Spring Clothing Exchange

Fast fashion is filling our landfills! But I LOVE to shop and I love clothes. What’s a granola-girl to do? Well, decades ago I went to my first clothing exchange and was sold on the concept. Now I host one almost every year. This year my Clothing Exchange is on Sunday, March 26th from 1-4pm. You are invited! If you are local to Sacramento and want to come please reply to this email for the details and address.

If you are not local I encourage you to grab some pals and host your own. Here’s some details on how to make it happen:

  • Give folks at least 6-8 weeks notice - it takes time to purge closets. I make a private facebook event and have printed fliers to give people. It helps to enlist a friend to invite their friends, you need at least a dozen people for a good swap.

  • Invite folks to drop off items that week if they cant attend, they can still donate.

  • Find a place to donate the leftovers after the event. I’ve filled a large car to the brim with bags each time.

  • Ask attendees to bring a drink and a snack to share so that people can sit and visit. It’s a social event too. Plus, it pays to wait as new donations come in.

  • As new folks arrive, invite them to shop while others sort through their donation bags (this happened naturally for us).

  • Wear layers that you can try on clothes over but also have a semi-private space available for changing clothes, either a bathroom or make-shift changing stall.

  • Encourage discussion and point out good finds like, “This is in great shape, who needs a new purse?”

  • Have paper, markers, and tape to set up zones for types of garments. Save boxes and bags to sort donations.

  • A garment rack or two, and multiple large mirrors are very helpful.

  • Have folks put a name tag on the bag with their “keepers” or reuse a plastic bin or laundry hamper.

  • Assign a RAGS bin for stained, torn, or damaged clothes. Bonus points for reusing the rags or making t-shirt yarn! I snag white clothes to use in tie dye workshops.

My ulterior motive for hosting a clothing exchange is that I love to alter and upcycle (print, dye, embroider) the left over clothes! This is a sweatshirt I saved from last years exchange and recently added sublimation prints to the back. I showed it to my son and he wanted to keep it! The price is that he has to model it for me.
