| 🏳️🌈 March is Women's Herstory, Bi+ Health, and Abilities Awareness Month(s)!🏳️🌈 | | Every month, LGBTQIA+ Equity releases an e-newsletter that contains our upcoming events, general MiraCosta announcements and resources, and opportunities within the overall LGBTQIA+ community. All graphics below are linked to external webpages. If you would like to submit something to be included in our newsletter, please email us at lgbtqia@miracosta.edu. ❤️ 🧡 💛 💚 💙 💜 🖤 In conjunction with MiraCosta College’s mission to serve disproportionately impacted communities and close the equity gap, the district celebrates its Women’s History Series. International Women’s Day is celebrated nationally on March 8th. Women’s History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28 which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week.” Since 1995, presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month.” These proclamations celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields. Here at the college, in observance of resolution No. 2-22/23, we celebrate the achievements and history of Women not just during the observed month, but throughout the year.
Bisexual Health Awareness Month (#BiHealthMonth) is a social media campaign dedicated to raising awareness about the bisexual+ community’s social, economic, and health disparities, advocating for resources, and inspiring actions to improve bi+ people’s well-being.
In conjunction with MiraCosta’s mission to serve disproportionately impacted communities and close the equity gap, the district celebrates its Ability Awareness Series. On February 26, 1987 former President Ronald Reagan officially declared Proclamation 5613 making March National Disabilities Awareness Month. The proclamation called for people to provide understanding, encouragement and opportunities to help persons with disabilities to lead productive and fulfilling lives. Everyone wants, and deserves, to enjoy life, feel productive and secure. But in March, we take extra steps to raise awareness about the supports and rights of the people with disabilities and to celebrate their contributions to our communities and society as a whole. Our belief is that disability is not a limitation, but rather an indication of perseverance, strength & determination in accomplishing all life endeavors. Our intention is to promote access, equity and inclusion; to instill a true sense of belonging at MiraCosta College for students with disabilities. Here at MiraCosta College, in observance of resolution No. 2-22/23, we celebrate the achievements and history of people with differing/various abilities within our community not just during the observed month, but throughout the year. ❤️ 🧡 💛 💚 💙 💜 🖤 | | 🏳️🌈 Students 🏳️🌈 1) Leadership Opportunity: The Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) are looking to grow their leadership team! | | | Trailblazer: UC San Diego’s Gender Health Program article from LGBTQ San Diego County News“UC San Diego’s Gender Health Program specifically serves the hospital system to ensure that patients who are seeking gender affirming care have a centralized model with which to work. Gender affirming care can be overwhelming to access, between finding the right providers, navigating insurance and determining pre-/post-operative requirements. Our program helps patients navigate these areas with more ease and direction so that patients can focus on what they need, NOT on how they are going to meet those medical needs… We are proud to say that we are the only system in San Diego that provides a full range of gender affirming options for our adult patients. Patients often start with an intake in our program, where we discuss patient goals and needs. We can provide referrals to our specialty departments at that time and, in many cases, can provide letters of readiness for our patients. Our comprehensive approach to care includes but is not limited to primary care, hormone replacement therapy, body contouring, top surgery, bottom surgery, hair removal, psychiatry, vocal coaching, fertility, and reproductive health. Our patients are incredible and consist of anyone 18 years of age and older with a variety of health insurance plans including Medi-Cal and Medi-Care looking for gender affirming services in San Diego. Patients can connect with us through our website linked here can email us at genderhealth@health.ucsd.edu.” | |
