Fossil Fuel Divest Harvard

Divest Digest (4/13/2023)

Campaign Updates

Fossil Fuel Divest Harvard has won divestment, but we're still fighting for a university that puts the needs of the planet first.

Our Manifesto - We've released a manifesto detailing our new goals and demands post-divestment! This manifesto encompasses our fight to end Harvard's continued ties to the fossil fuel industry, to ensure a just reinvestment, and to make Harvard more accountable to its community and the world. It comes out of two years of research and reports from FFDH students and alumni, in consultation with other climate- and justice-based groups in greater Boston. We have also been endorsed by Fossil Free Research! Read the full manifesto on our website or our twitter

Teach-In On Harvard's Complicity - Next week, during the Harvard Climate Coalition's Intersectional Earth Week, we're holding a teach-in on Harvard's complicity in the climate crisis. Come to learn how Harvard has failed on climate and what the new administration should do better. We'll also provide some ways to make your voice heard to President-elect Gay! We will be at the Democracy Center on Friday, April 21st, from 1:30-2:45pm. RSVP here

Earth Day March with Extinction Rebellion - After our teach-in, take the T down to Boston with FFDH for the Extinction Rebellion Earth Day March! XR is working to pressure Massachusetts to stop approving new fossil fuel infrastructure. We will met at the Harvard T stop at 3:00pm, and FFDH will provide signs and transportation. Come to celebrate and protect the Earth!

Take Action!

These are some quick but important ways to get involved with fights for justice—environmental and otherwise. Please take a few minutes to complete these actions if you can.

This week’s action items:

Write or call your representatives and tell them to #StopWillow

The Willow oil drilling project, the largest oil and gas project ever proposed in the US, is being contested in Congress. A letter to pause development on the project, preventing immediate harm and allowing the government to reconsider its impacts, is ready to send to the Department of the Interior. Write to your representatives and ask them to sign on!

Send a letter to an Atlanta Forest Defender

Eleven protestors arrested in the Weelaunee Forest in Atlanta are still in jail. Six have their contact information public; visit the Defend the Atlanta Forest instagram page to learn how to write to them!

Support HUWU tomorrow, 4/14, as they rally to unionize!

The Harvard Undergraduate Workers Union is fighting for recognition. Harvard has failed to voluntarily recognize the union, so HUWU is rallying on Friday, 4/14, at 2pm by the John Harvard statue. Come to show your support!

Article of the Week:

The Boston Globe: Harvard environmental lawyer under fire for oil industry ties

Jody Freeman, a renowned environmental lawyer at Harvard, is under fire for her ties to the fossil fuel industry.

Freeman is founding director of Harvard University's environmental and energy law program. As co-chair of Harvard's presidential committee on sustainability, she helps shape the institution's response to climate change. She also sits on the board of directors for ConocoPhillips, a leading fossil fuel company whose massive Willow oil drilling project in Alaska was recently approved by the Biden administration. Her annual compensation for the position in cash fees and stock awards totals over $350,000, SEC filings say.

E-mails obtained by Fossil Fuel Divest Harvard under the Freedom of Information Act show that Freeman helped facilitate a meeting between ConocoPhillips and a federal agency.
