Pastor's Message:

It's Not Too Late to Join Us in Our Lenten Sermon Series

It may be hard to believe this, but we are already coming up on the third Sunday of Lent. It is hard to believe how fast this season in the lead-up to Easter has felt. So fast, in fact, that I have not talked up my sermon series for Lent in the newsletter yet! Of course, if you have been with us on Sundays, or if you have noticed the wonderful graphics put together by our amazing Office Administrator, Carol, then you know that I have been doing a series I call: Three Easy Ways to Grow Your Church (and How Jesus Was Tempted by Them Too!). In this series, we are taking an in-depth look at the story of Jesus being tempted in the wilderness, as we take a week to look at each temptation in turn and how they might relate to us.

To be honest, it is a series that I have always wanted to do, and Lent just seemed like the perfect time to do it. Because Lent is a time for introspection and a time for repentance. For me, it is a time to approach ourselves with humility and wonder where we might have strayed from the path to God, and instead have sided with the world. In my introduction sermon, I shared the reality that one of the lessons we must take from Easter is that the people who crucified our Lord were not people who were seeking to do evil, but people who thought that in killing Jesus, they were protecting what was important: their culture, their religion, their way of life. They had the best intentions, but those intentions unwittingly lead them away from God. Lent is a time for us to figure out if the same might not be true of us, and to return to God once again.

With this in mind, I am interested in connecting Jesus’ temptations to our own. But not just as individuals, as the original temptations were also temptations of Jesus’ ministry. And in that way, they are also temptations we as the church face, temptations to grow our church the easy way, but the way that will ultimately lead us away from God. As we look at each temptation in turn, I hope that we will turn that mirror on ourselves, as a Body of Christ, and see where we might have need to repent. If you have missed the past couple of weeks, then you’ve missed the first of the temptations, feeding people what they want instead of what they need. But you can still join us this week as we look into the second temptation together: bringing people in by creating an irresistible spectacle.

I hope you will join us at 9:30 am this Sunday for worship. I also remind you that Daylight Savings is this Sunday, so change those clocks so you don’t come in an hour late. In the meantime, I pray you have a blessed rest of your week, and look forward to seeing you soon!

Blessings,
Pastor Jaime

Update from Jennifer Scott

Jennifer Scott extends her gratitude for your support in her pursuit of ministry and offers up a prayer of thanksgiving! She recently wrote more papers and interviewed with the District Committee on Ordained Ministry. The committee approved her for the Local Licensed Pastor's pool! Once she completes certification this spring, she can be appointed to a local church as a Local Licensed Pastor by the Conference. She couldn't have done this without the love and support of everyone at SUMC!

Children of SUMC

The season of Lent can be very challenging for many of us. Whether it is giving something up, adding something new into our lives, trying to be more like God or whatever it is… it is challenging. Luckily we have a great example with us! Our Children! They are doing amazing things and I could not be more proud of them. We have been practicing doing selfless acts, doing something for someone else so, this past Wednesday we gathered at Mast park. We took this time to reflect on the many things that we have done so far. We found a log that reminded us that Lent is a balancing act. As they walked along the log they talked about how it takes focus, just like Lent. If your child, grandchild, neighbor, or any kid you know that is grades 1st-6th then this is the place for them! We would love to have them, we meet from 4:30-5:30 every Wednesday!

I am so excited to say that this coming Wednesday (March 15th) we will be having our first Parent/ Guardian Support group! This is for parents, guardians or grandparents that may need to talk to someone their own age about struggles that they might be facing, whether it be within their household, themselves or not being able to make connections with their children. This is a safe place where they may gather to figure out new ways of coping or getting new ways to handle certain situations. This is not a class that will be run, this is an open conversation/ check-in. The Wednesday meet will be held in the conference room at 10am, we would like this to be a child free zone! If you would like to join us please let me know, I will have coffee and muffins!!

Easter is right around the corner, as always we will be having our Easter egg hunt. We would love your help! Whether it is stuffing the bags or donations! We have made an Amazon wishlist, this is the easiest way to receive donations. We are also asking for Amazon, Hobby Lobby, or Visa Gift Cards. All donations will go to the egg hunt and whatever is left will go to Sunday School or Nursery. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

It is never too early to talk about VBS! I will keep this part short, WE NEED YOU! Please let me know if you will be volunteering! VBS will be held July 10th-14th, VBS set-up will be July 8th. Registration for the congregation will open April 2nd!

Thank you all for your love and support,

Youth

Scenes from District-Wide Youth "Prayer Stations in the Street" at San Dieguito UMC!

This past Sunday, Youth from the entire South District gathered together at San Dieguito UMC for a powerful night of reflection, worship, and prayer! They had the opportunity to meditate as they walked a labyrinth, and participated in eight different prayer stations where they reflected on where they experience God in the world, who they are called to be, who God says they are, and things they would like to change in order to recognize God's kin-dom here on earth!

Adult Bible Study

Are you looking for personal growth in your faith?  Please join the Monday night adult bible study as we start a new series on the book of Hebrews.  Learning, sharing, and praying together is how Jesus shared his message with his followers. Join a group whose members come from different backgrounds, with a common goal to learn more about God's word and share and support each other and our community.

The Monday night bible study meets the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month at 6:30pm - 7:30pm in Sunshine Hall.  If you have questions, please contact Malcolm Graham (malber31@gmail.com), Janet Totten (tottenfamily@att.net) or Michael Van Vugt (858-699-2641).

We are excited to greet you at our next study on Monday, March 13th!

Financial Giving

We thank all of those who have been able to prioritize your giving to the church. Santee UMC cannot continue to offer the programs and ministries that help our young people and our community without your continued support. As you are able, please help the church continue to provide ministry by doing any of the following:
  • Consider making a formal pledge (a promise of giving for the coming or current year), even if you know you plan to give and even if you recognize that circumstances and pledges might change the amount. Without your pledges, it is difficult to reliably create a budget and plan our ministries from year to year. Contact our Finance Secretary, Sarah Leslie, for more information.
  • Move your giving to Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) to ensure your regular giving continues, even if you forget. Sarah Leslie will be able to help you with this as well.
  • Give online through our secure website giving page (reminder: there is a 3% charge to the church for each transaction. If you are donating regularly we encourage the EFT option).
  • You can always give by dropping off your offering in the church mailbox or mailing a check to 8964 N. Magnolia Ave., Santee CA 92071.

Make the Most of Your Giving . . .
Did you know your donations to the Church are tax deductible? Any donation you don't receive direct products or services for can be deducted from your taxes. Whether you're giving toward your pledge, to a specific ministry, or making a general plate contribution make sure to fill out a giving envelope so all your donations appear on your year-end giving statement. Questions? Contact Finance Secretary, Sarah Leslie.
