Dear Lakeside Elementary Families,
Last week, our third grade students showcased their knowledge during their Walk Through Time event held in Lakeside's gymnasium. Students had the opportunity to select a famous person or event of their choice. Once selected, they spent many weeks researching their subject. They presented their findings in a written report and created a display for this special 3rd grade event. Many students also dressed to match their theme. Please enjoy the photos below of this wonderful learning event.
Spring Conferences
Conferences will be held on Tuesday, March 14. All conferences have been scheduled. If you have any questions about the time of your conferences, please contact Mrs. Buzalski at 616.235.7553 or mbuzalsk@egrps.org with questions.
School Musical Mary Poppins, Jr. This Week!
We are excited that this Wednesday afternoon the cast and crew of Mary Poppins, Jr. will perform their dress rehearsal for students and staff in Pioneer Auditorium. Family and friends are invited to attend the Friday evening or Saturday matinee during the times listed below. You may purchase tickets in the office, online by clicking here, or at the door prior to each performance.
- Friday, March 18 at 7:00 p.m.
- Saturday, March 18 at 2:00 p.m
This year, we have 125 students involved in the musical! It is truly a student-led production from the stage crew to the sound and light boards to hair and make-up. Every aspect is managed by students which makes this an incredibly unique experience for elementary aged children. A special thank you to Mr. Andrew Schneider, Director, and Mrs. April Hunt, Parent Producer, for their continued leadership on this year’s production. They had numerous volunteers assisting her along the way and I know all their care and dedication will be reflected in our students’ performances. We hope you’ll come to be part of this “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" event, Mary Poppins, Jr.!
Kids Food Basket (KFB) Week: March 20-24
Next week Lakeside Elementary is partnering with Kids Food Basket here in Grand Rapids to raise awareness around childhood hunger. This video explains more of what Kids Food Basket (KFB) does here in our community. Please see an informational video here that explains the history of KFB.
KFB Week is a time when we come together with other local area schools to support the work of this organization in various ways. Please see information on KFB Week here. Throughout the school year, many of our classrooms visit or decorate food bags for this amazing cause, and we will continue that next week. We will be collecting items through a food drive that will be given to children in need. Families may also make a donation to KFB if they wish to do so by accessing the QR code in the flyer above. Since there are six desired food donation items, each grade level should bring in the following items if choosing to participate:
-
Kindergarten: Goldfish crackers
-
1st grade: Cheez-It crackers
-
2nd grade: .28 oz or .5 oz meat sticks
-
3rd grade: Raisin boxes
-
4th grade: Pudding cups
-
5th grade: Fruit cups
Students and families should drop off their donated food items between March 20 and 24 in the boxes located in the main entryway near the Lakeside main office. If you have any questions, please contact me at sthelen@egrps.org.
State Assessments
The M-STEP state assessment for third through fifth grade students begins after Spring Break based on windows of time determined by the state. Our M-STEP testing schedule is found here. Please try to schedule appointments around these dates and times to prevent your child(ren) from missing class time to complete make-up test sessions.
March is Reading Month
March is one of the most exciting months in an elementary school due to the celebration of March is Reading Month! Throughout this month we continue to promote one of our favorite activities - reading! We will be hosting Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.) time throughout the month where our students and staff will all enjoy a good book by reading independently. In addition, we invite students to participate in the following Spirit Days
-
Friday, March 17- Reading Gives You a Bright Future (dress in bright colors)
-
Friday, March 24- Camp Out with a Good Book (bring a flashlight and wear pjs)
In addition to our school-wide activities, teachers will host activities unique to their classrooms. Thank you to our PTO for providing us the opportunity to participate in March Book Madness again this year. All classrooms will read picture books from March Book Madness 2023 and vote on their favorite titles. We look forward to a great month of celebrations!
