Pāua Shells

Pāua (the Māori name) Shells, also known as abalone shells in the U.S.and Australia or ormer shells in the U.K., are the most colourful abalone shell in the world, it has hues of deep blue, green and bits of purple and pink.

They are harvested on the rocky coastlines of New Zealand. They cling to the rocks in shallow water, they are more profuse and can grow much bigger in cold waters.

Even though the Pāua Shells seem like they are artificially coloured, their vibrant colours are actually from the sea snails’ diet of brown and algae as well as bladder kelp.
