Palm Springs knows how to party, and the city is planning a big one for a major milestone in April.

Driving the news: Officials announced Friday the city’s 85th anniversary will be marked on Saturday, April 8, with a classic car parade, a car show, activities for kids, a canine celebrity costume contest, and an Elton John tribute concert.

  • The car show will be unique in that it will feature models from each year since the city was first incorporated. Attendees will be encouraged to pose for pictures beside the car from their birth year.

What they’re saying: “No other city that I know of has ever had 85 cars representing 85 years all in one place,” said Keith McCormick, a longtime resident and founder of Palm Springs Exotic Car Auctions who is organizing the vehicle display.

Zoom in: Events kick off at 11:30 a.m. with the parade, titled “Cruising Through The Years,” which will start at the Palm Springs Convention Center and run down Amado Road, finishing at the “Forever Marilyn” statue near Downtown Park. An opening ceremony with remarks from current elected officials will follow.

Details: The city has launched a website with complete information. Visit the website here.

And finally...

Palm Springs High School football coach Dan Murphy, who told us in October he would step down after this season, has officially retired.

Driving the news: School officials on Friday announced Murphy was leaving after compiling a 76-42 record and earning three league titles, including a share of one this season.

Up next: While there is no word on Murphy's replacement, the coach said he will be relocating to Arkansas, where he has family. He had worked there after graduation from Boise State University.

  • Murphy, a 1983 graduate of PSHS, attended college on a football scholarship.
What they're saying: "He was more than just a coach to us," former player Julian Polendo told sportswriter Andrew John. "He was a mentor and someone we all could rely on. ... He was one of the best to ever do it in Palm Springs history."
