The world’s insatiable demand for seafood puts immense pressure on aquatic animals, whose stories are underreported. Our photojournalist S. Chakrabarti recently documented India's fishing and aquaculture industry with an emphasis on shrimp production, a major seafood export in the country.
Animals pulled from the sea are measured in tonnes rather than counted as individuals, and we continue to deny that these individuals have a range of intelligence and emotions.

From the beginning, our goal was to share the message of our book, HIDDEN, with as many people as possible. It continues to be exhibited globally. From January 26 to April 15, Galerie FAIT & CAUSE in Paris is hosting an exhibit of images from the book.
For a look at what’s being done worldwide to help animals and how we can all take part, view and download HIDDEN’s companion PDF, “The Way Forward.”

Photo of the Month: Unlucky 7

It isn’t widely known that pigs are subjected to painful and distressing experiments in medical research. Our photo of the month reveals how this looks: the restraint, the impersonal number scrawled on this pig’s forehead in pen. She hangs, suspended and helpless. Most vital here is the eye contact. She seems to be looking up at a person, perhaps wondering what is next. This is one of the 204 images in our book, HIDDEN.
We’ve seen promising movement around animal testing policies. The FDA just released new regulations in the United States, and Canada is poised to ban testing of cosmetics on animals altogether.

Meet some of the wonderful individuals behind We Animals Media in our Meet the Team Q&A series. Each month throughout 2023 we’ll be publishing a new behind-the-scenes feature for you to learn about the folks at WAM.
This month we spoke with our Director of Global Fieldwork and Visual Content, Victoria de Martigny.

|
Animal photojournalism is risky and crucial work. Our photographers and filmmakers gather evidence. We collaborate. We publish widely. We mentor. We influence. We speak about animal issues globally. We are even speaking at the EU Parliament next month! And we are able to do all of this thanks to your support. Please help us continue these monumental efforts by making a financial donation to We Animals Media. Everything helps.

Rows of barren tanks at Kanaloa Octopus Farm in Hawaii each confine a single octopus who was wild-caught. Hawaii, USA, 2022. Laura Lee Cascada / The Every Animal Project / We Animals Media

|
We recently published new images of the Kanaloa Octopus Farm in Hawaii, shot by Laura Lee Cascada, the founder of The Every Animal Project. The farm has captured and attempted to breed hundreds of octopuses, a process that always ends in death for both males and females.
But there is progress being made: Bill HB 1153 - Prohibiting Octopus Farming has passed the first committee vote in the state of Washington with overwhelming support thanks to the Animal Rights Initiative, the Aquatic Animal Alliance members and many others.
