Cheney Library Updates
Library news and updates for March 2023

Congratulations to Emmajane on Reading her First 100 Books for the Cheney Library Challenge!

Emmajane Cottrell was born on Babcock Lake Road in Grafton July 24, 1922 to Howard and Lucy Babcock. Raymond and Esther were her older brother and sister. They grew up on the family farm and walked to the schoolhouse just up the road from their home. Emmajane also attended the high school in Berlin for a couple of years. In October 1944 she married Sherman Cottrell and went to live on his Wilson Hill Road farm. Emmajane was a typical farmer’s wife, taking care of the home, helping in the barn, growing and canning vegetables, plus mowing the grass and raising flowers. Sherman and Emmajane had two sons, James and Peter. She is a grandmother to 7 and great-grandmother to 3.

Emmajane is a wonderful cook and every meal ended with a piece of pie or cake or cookies. She stayed busy and her home was well cared for as well as the yard. Today she lives at Wood Park, where she lovingly takes care of her rooms. Emmajane loves to read westerns, English novels about the 1800s and the antics of Miss Julia; she rarely misses Bob Ross’s program on TV because she is also an accomplished artist.

Emmajane is a lifelong member of the Hoosick Falls First Babtist Church. She is willing to help anyone out in any way that she can, maybe with a warm meal, a listening ear or a helping hand. And when Emmajane smiles, which is often, she lights up the room.
