Father John Writes

What does it mean to Love God

Though it is one of the most important questions to ask, each person must search their own heart for a response to, "What does it mean to love God?"

I took a moment to ponder and here are some of my thoughts. To love God means to delight in creation, the light shining in the window, the caress of my breath on my nose as I begin to rouse from sleep. To love God means to feel awe at the hills, and the trees, and the new spring flowers popping out of my winter dead garden pots.

To love God means gratitude for Edward saying "Hi" in the morning, and gratitude for all the (other) people I encounter in my day. To love God means to notice what is beautiful and good in others without jealousy but with joy. To love God means to believe that I can serve also from a God-given worth and purpose. To love God is to trust I will make it through valleys of gloom, and I can join others there, take their hand, and have no need to say a word. To love God means I can do something for others just as God has done so much for me.

To love God is to trust, give my heart to the hope, that good will overcome ill, joy will come in the morning, loving kindness will bring healing and solace to the natural wounds we have in living. For me love of God is the heartfelt desire to live my life so that it imitates all that is good, true, beautiful, generous and compassionate that I see in the life of Jesus and the saints. To love God is to embrace this world, its people, its unfolding events, with delight that I have been asked to participate. To love God is celebration.

How would you respond to the question, "What does it mean to love God?" Lent is an excellent time to ask this question.

Have a blessed week,
Father John+

Thirsty

“I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink.”  (Matthew 25:35)

According to Matthew, Jesus told his followers that when they furnish needy people with food, water, shelter, and clothing, they are actually giving these necessities to him.

The little Tufted Titmouse is drinking water from our birdbath.  Is it possible that all living members of the creation could be included among the beings that Jesus called “the least of these” when they have needs that we can meet?
