I had the pleasure of attending the annual water polo festival at Grey in Gqeberha last week, where our U13A team competed with great skill and sportsmanship. Despite missing out on a spot in the semi-finals by just one point, they were outstanding ambassadors for our school. I would like to extend my congratulations to the team, their parents and their coaches for their hard work and dedication throughout their journey.

Tomorrow, we will be hosting our Open Day for prospective parents who are considering Wynberg as a schooling option for their children in 2024. If you know anyone who might be interested, please share the link in the header with them and encourage them to register. I would like to express my gratitude to the Parent Association and all those who will be assisting at the event, as well as those who have contributed to ensuring our guests feel welcome.

As we approach the start of the admissions process for public schools in the Western Cape, please be reminded that all parents with siblings need to submit their WCED online applications as soon as possible and then inform us. Additionally, Grade 7 parents should complete their applications for high schools via the WCED online portal.
Click here for the WCED guide to Admissions.

Looking ahead to the end of the week, we are excited to host a fun family picnic on Friday evening. The Parent Association has been hard at work setting up for this event, and we expect more than 30 stall holders to be in attendance, selling a variety of wares and treats. I encourage all members of our community to attend and enjoy the last days of summer.

Mr Cedric Poleman
Headmaster
Grade 6
As part of an integrated approach to learning, Grade 6 boys have been designing and making an interactive world map poster. They have done research about current news around the world from five different continents. Once they are done with the poster, they will be using Scratch to report what they have researched. This will be taken and integrated with Makey Makey (Click here to find out more about this resource). This has given them the opportunity to explore Geography from a more practical point of view while learning about current news.
Grade 4
The Grade 4s had an exciting outing to The College of Magic. They learnt about the history of magic and about famous magicians. They also watched an entertaining magic show and even learnt magic tricks which they can show their family and friends!
Music
The Grade 4 boys had great fun explaining the answers they derived from a Musical Mathematics assessment during their class music lesson this week. They used their musical vocabulary to discuss the note values learned this term.
The Concert Band has been invited to perform this Friday at the beginning of the Family Picnic event. We look forward to a warmup performance with new members of the band inducted at the beginning of 2023. We will be performing familiar pieces while we prepare new repertoire ahead of our Grey Tour.

Grade 6 and 7 boys are starting to explore the
Bandlab software during Class Music. Every year we spend a significant amount of time, especially in Grade 7, exposing the boys to digital music production using freeware in the form of browser-based DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations). This sort of browser-based freeware has only become available in very recent times. It is part of the quickly advancing frontier of music production software that is open and available to all.

Our new
Marimba and Ukulele groups are running smoothly and are open to new members. Please feel free to sign your sons up using the New Music Student Application available on our website.

Please note that our
Bands, Choirs, and Ensembles will continue throughout the year regardless of the season, or any changes to the rest of the Extra mural Programme.
Art
Please note there will be no Senior Art Club next week as all extra murals have been cancelled. The Senior Art Club will resume on Wednesday, 22 March 2023.
Drama
We will be performing The Taming of the Shrew at the annual Shakespeare Schools’ Festival on Monday, 22 May, at The District Six Homecoming Centre.

Auditions will take place on Monday, 27 March, and Tuesday, 28 March, from 15h00 to 16h00 for Grades 5, 6, and 7. We encourage the Grade 7s to be part of this wonderful festival, as it is their last year at the junior school.

If boys could not attend Drama Club this term, due to other obligations, but plan to attend in Term 2, we encourage them to audition too. Boys interested in auditioning may collect the information and script required from Ms Fourie as soon as possible.
Early Act Club
Early Act Club ends this week for Term 1.
Civvies Day
We thank our Wynberg community for the Civvies day contributions in aid of the Children's Hospital Fund. We are able to donate R13 516,75 to make healthcare more accessible to all children. Well done!
Easter Egg Collection
Our annual charity Easter Egg collection begins on Monday, 13 March. We particularly welcome donations of marshmallow eggs. The Co-Workers of Mother Teresa will distribute the eggs to underprivileged children in the townships, creches, farm schools, and organisations that help the poor.

As an added incentive to the drive, the boys and classes contributing the most eggs will be rewarded for their efforts. We are grateful to our boys who always collect enthusiastically, and to our families who generously donate to this worthy cause every year.
WBJS Media Team
We would like to inform you that we've officially started the WBJS Media Club 2023. The club is open to Grade 7 boys and Grade 6 boys will be added during Term 2. We share the enthusiasm and are excited to announce that the club has been formalized this year. Boys who meet the Service Award criteria will receive Merit Awards under the Service Pillar at the end of the year.

Parent's of boys who expressed interest, received an email today. We kindly request that you review it with your son and ensure that he has no conflicts. Photography needs will be limited to school premises, with only one or two exceptions at a neighbouring school. In such cases, the photographers will be transported with the team via school transport. We kindly request that you collect your son on time from any offsite location.

As this is the first time we are running such a club at Wynberg, we kindly ask for your patience. We are thrilled to teach the boys a valuable skill! Please note that the school has two cameras, and the boys do not require any equipment. All they need is dedication and a sense of responsibility!

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me (Mrs Said - marketing@wbjs.org.za) or Mrs Warner (swarner@wbjs.org.za). If you see our photographers out and about, don't be shy - let them snap you!
