Hello Mighty Mite Prep Skiers,
 
This weekend is the big event -- the 26th Annual Sallie McNabb Cup!  It will be a day to compete, cheer for teammates, pick up some “SWAG”, and celebrate with the coaches.   Please read through the following notes carefully with your racer so that parent and competitor can be prepared. Some things have changed this year:
  • You do not need to register for the race.  All Prep skiers are automatically entered. Please check the start roster at the bottom of this email to be sure your name, year of birth, and gender are correct.  If there is a mistake, or if you are not going to be entering the race, please send me an email as soon as possible so we can correct the start list. 
  • It will be a timed GS on Gold Hill with two runs. Both times are combined to determine the top competitors for each age group.  The course will be set similar to our training courses, so there is no need to be nervous. There will be single gate panels – alternating blue/red gates. Just do your best and HAVE FUN! 
  • The first run start order will be u8 girls, u10 girls, u12 girls, u14 girls; u8 boys, u10 boys, u12 boys, u14 boys. Second run will be the same order of each age group, but reversed within each age group (u8 girls, highest bib number counting down to #1; then u10 girls highest to lowest, etc).
  • Coaches will lead their groups through course inspection and help coordinate the start with each racer when it is their turn to race. Racers will stay with their coach as much as possible throughout the day, Many groups have mixed age brackets and boys and girls, so that group will likely have a mix of start times and varying lunch breaks. Therefore, a certain level of parental help and/or independence may be necessary, as there may be different times for lunch to coordinate with parents. 
  • Arrive early, ready to go at 7:30am!  Pick up your race bib at the patio near the firepit, then walk to Gold Hills to meet your coach.
  • All Groups will meet at bottom of Gold Hills lift at 8:00am to inspect the course.
  • USSA rules apply – competitors are required to pass each gate on the correct side, alternating red/blue panels, and complete both runs for a combined score. If you crash or miss a gate, you can NOT hike back up to the gate or get back on the course.  In the event of a crash, get yourself and your gear quickly off the course and then ski down outside the course. If you crash or disqualify on the first run, you can still have a second run but are not qualified for a medal.  
  • Racers need to wear their helmet, goggles and gloves during the race. A few kids have race suits, but most do not. No other special equipment is required.  All types of ski helmets are allowed, but this in an exception for this event (all other races require hard ear helmets). If you plan to replace your helmet soon, be sure to get a hard ear helmet for future racing.  No helmet cams, backpacks or hydration packs allowed while racing. 
  • Racers will pick up bibs from the registration table or from your coach in the morning. Your bib must be visible from front and back during the race. Bibs must be returned at the finish or to your coach after second run. When you return your bib after the race, you will get a special SMC souvenir!  If you do not return your bib, you will be charged a fee.
  • Course inspection is only to be done with a coach. You must side slip, or snowplow. IMPORTANT: Skiing through any gates prior to the race, even in a quick snowplow, is not allowed and will disqualify you from the race. 
  • If you miss your start time, you may be disqualified.  The start referee or Chief of Race will decide if you are allowed a late start. 
  • Please coordinate lunch time with the coach, as each group will do lunch after the first run. The schedule below is only an estimate.  Crashes or other delays may affect start times. 
  • Trophies or medals will be given to the top five boys and the top five girls in each age category (Adv Prep, U12, U10, U8). The Annual Sallie McNabb Overall Cup is given to the fastest Prep boy and fastest Prep girl of the day.  The Overall trophies are perpetual trophies that are passed on to new winners each year.  
  • End of the race will be after the final run (see schedule below), usually around 3:00-3:30pm. Parents should try to meet their racer after second run and free ski or go to the Alpine for the BBQ depending on timing.  
  • You may follow the race live at www.live-timing.com !  Live Timing does not show placement by age group and is not the official results.  Times will also be posted at the finish. 
  • COSTUMES:  We like to add a bit of fun to this event, so wear your crazy costumes, wild colors, grass skirts, tropical shirts, wigs, face paint, etc. --anything fun, crazy or colorful, as long as it's safe to race in.  Parents, join in the fun too! 
  • The Annual COACH's Challenge will be after the last racer of the day.  Stick around to cheer on your favorite coach as they compete with each other for the glorious Coach's Trophy and more importantly, bragging rights.

NEW!!  During the race, we will have a grill at the top of the course with free hot dogs for racers only!  Weather conditions or a lack of volunteers may change this, so have a backup plan for lunch just in case.

AWARDS & BBQ will be held outside the Alpine Inn. It is free for Prep and Advanced Prep members and their immediate families. We'll get started on the BBQ around 3:30pm and hope to start awards at 4:00pm. Stick around for some food, fun and (hopefully) hardware!
