Vollie Hub is produced each month by the Shire of Gingin to inform volunteer groups of available grants, resources, and upcoming events. Thank you for all you do to make our communities more inclusive, vibrant, healthy and safe.

You are welcome to share this information onwards.

Happy reading,
Mick (Community Development Officer)
Welcome back to our monthly newsletter.  I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself.  From the 21st March 2023 I will be the back-up Community Development Officer.  My name is Mick Emmanuel and I will be standing in for Olivia Forbes for the next twelve months.

Whilst I am new to local government, I do have extensive experience serving various communities around Western Australia as a police officer. I served regional communities from the Kimberley and Pilbara to the Wheatbelt for a total of 14 years.  I also spent many years in Perth practising community service on many levels.  My country experience very much informed how I consulted and collaborated with people in the city.  I am proud to say that it is through community engagement and consultation that I experienced the very best outcomes throughout my career.

I am now very much looking forward to working closely with the various communities and people within the Gingin Shire.  By working together, I firmly believe we can build on the many great initiatives that are already enhancing our lives and our communities.  We also encourage new ideas and will work tirelessly to ensure those ideas grow and prosper.

On a personal note, my partner Sharon and I live in the Rangeview Estate in Gingin where we are now in our 7th year.  We absolutely love the serenity, peace and quiet of our property and the beauty of the surrounding environment.  It is our piece of paradise, and we are very proud to say so.  Together we have four children and seven grandchildren who all love to visit our property to enjoy our animals, open space and the escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

I can be contacted on 9575 5176 or mick.emmanuel@gingin.wa.gov.au

THE GREATEST ASSET OF ANY COMMUNITY IS SIMPLY PEOPLE WHO CARE

On Saturday 18 February, 15 volunteers from across the Shire gathered to learn from community development expert Peter Kenyon. The topic was “Attracting and Retaining Volunteering”. Between 2016 and 2021 Western Australia has experienced a 22% reduction in volunteers which equates to over 150,000 individuals. Peter explained the dynamics affecting this loss, but most importantly presented creative solutions to attract and retain communities most valuable contributors – volunteers. The interactive day provided a wealth of inspiration, and easy to implement strategies for attendees to take back to their groups.
ARTICULATING PURPOSE AND GETTING THINGS DONE

Members from a broad range of community groups gathered at the Woodridge Hall on 8 March 2023 to problem-solve issues faced by office bearers. The session was made possible by funding from Volunteering WA and facilitated by expert Caroline Robinson. Caroline guided attendees through how to effectively articulate the groups’ purpose by providing a simple one sentence answer to the question: what is the problem you are passionately trying to solve?

Current problems being faced by groups in the room were then workshopped to find practical solutions. A copy of the notes will be developed and circulated to the community in the next edition of Vollie Hub.

Thank you to the Woodridge Community Association for providing delicious catering and a lovely space to meet in! We are hoping to put on more workshops in the coming year, if there is a topic you would find valuable to learn more on then please contact the team via
