THE GREATEST ASSET OF ANY COMMUNITY IS SIMPLY PEOPLE WHO CARE
On Saturday 18 February, 15 volunteers from across the Shire gathered to learn from community development expert Peter Kenyon. The topic was “Attracting and Retaining Volunteering”. Between 2016 and 2021 Western Australia has experienced a 22% reduction in volunteers which equates to over 150,000 individuals. Peter explained the dynamics affecting this loss, but most importantly presented creative solutions to attract and retain communities most valuable contributors – volunteers. The interactive day provided a wealth of inspiration, and easy to implement strategies for attendees to take back to their groups.

ARTICULATING PURPOSE AND GETTING THINGS DONE
Members from a broad range of community groups gathered at the Woodridge Hall on 8 March 2023 to problem-solve issues faced by office bearers. The session was made possible by funding from Volunteering WA and facilitated by expert Caroline Robinson. Caroline guided attendees through how to effectively articulate the groups’ purpose by providing a simple one sentence answer to the question: what is the problem you are passionately trying to solve?
Current problems being faced by groups in the room were then workshopped to find practical solutions. A copy of the notes will be developed and circulated to the community in the next edition of Vollie Hub.
Thank you to the Woodridge Community Association for providing delicious catering and a lovely space to meet in! We are hoping to put on more workshops in the coming year, if there is a topic you would find valuable to learn more on then please contact the team via cdo@gingin.wa.gov.au
