Good Morning,
How many times have you logged onto Facebook, Instagram or TikTok just to scroll through or lose yourself in funny Reels and videos, after a hard day? I do this often and while I always have the best intentions when I log on, I have found I don’t always log off with that upbeat or content feeling I was hoping to get. In fact, too many times I leave a social media site feeling somewhat down. Currently, my feeds are filled with gorgeous and successful horses and riders living on beautifully manicured farms, winning big at horse shows! In the past it’s been more of things like my house isn’t as clean and nice as that one friend or I just don’t have it as together as some of my friends. And although I hate to admit this one, sometimes I even think why can’t I make as much money as that person? And the sad part is, I know I am not alone in these feelings.
On some level, I’m guessing we all struggle with self-comparison from social media. It doesn’t have to be that way. Ideally, social media helps us feel more connected and give us a sense of belonging instead of making us feel more inadequate and magnifying our struggles.
In this week’s blog, “Don’t Let Social Media Dim Your Light. The Dangers of Social Comparison,” I discuss social comparison brought on through social media and ways we can protect our mental health from it.
