With the deadline to file for homestead exemptions approaching, I always encourage you to do your homework to ensure you're receiving every exemption to which you are entitled. Start by reviewing your tax bill from last year that will show the exemptions that you have received. Then review the current exemptions that are available, as they can change from year-to-year.
Fulton County, cities and Fulton County schools offer various tax breaks. These include the basic homestead exemption as well as exemptions for seniors, veterans, low-income homeowners and others. Generally speaking, once you file for a homestead exemption, you do not need to file again as exemptions renew automatically if you continue to occupy the property.
Investing a few minutes of your time to review this information can save you a considerable amount of money on your tax bill.
DEADLINE TO APPLY IS APRIL 1, 2023
Note that in 2023, there is a new Fulton County Schools exemption that provides an additional $10,000 exemption of the assessed value of property (outside of the city of Atlanta) for those over the age of 65, regardless of income. While income limitations do not apply, you must have been granted a homestead exemption in Fulton County for the past five years to be eligible. This exemption affects only the Fulton County Schools portion of your tax bill. Please check to see if you are eligible to take advantage of this tax relief to save money on your 2023 property taxes.
