News from Washington Latin

Anna Julia Cooper Campus

Dear Cooper Families,

I hope you are all enjoying this oddly cold weekend, just as we "spring forward" on the clock. While the official start of spring comes on the 21st, it does feel like we are speeding towards the end of Quarter 3 and Spring Break. There is still work to do, of course, but we are already planning a number of fun events for students - and parents! Please see below for a call for Bacchanalia hosts, as well as a brief introduction to how we do the last week of school at Washington Latin.

As we look towards these next three months, I want to reiterate my commitment to you all to communicate about all things Cooper with clarity and transparency. This includes events, all of which will be new to all of us at Cooper. I will be sure to give you as much information as possible as soon as it becomes available, especially when it will affect the calendar. And I would ask that you all continue to extend grace and work with me and my team in partnership, as we craft Cooper's year-end events and establish new traditions.

With that said, you can all look forward to a fairly standard week ahead. May you enjoy the chilly evening, and see you soon!

Sincerely,

Khashiffa Roberts

Principal

Spring Sports Tryouts Begin

Monday, March 13 at 2nd Street Campus

Sports tryouts will begin this week for Cooper and 2nd Street students who are registered. Families should have received information from the team coach or Mr. Eleby-El with details about days and times.

To ensure Cooper students arrive with time to change and get ready for tryouts and subsequent practices, we are changing the 2nd Street Shuttle departure time to 3:20 pm from Cooper. This will continue through the spring season; we will update families of any future schedule change.

After a years-long hiatus, we are excited for the return of Multicultural Night at Washington Latin Public Charter Schools! This event is a celebration of the rich diversity of culture in our community. We invite families (or groups of families!) from both campuses and ALL countries/cultures to host a table and represent at a fair in the 2nd Street Multi-Purpose Room on Thursday, April 13th, starting at 6:30pm. Not able to host a table? No problem! We invite everyone to come out and experience our community’s diversity through displays, music, art and of course, food!!

To sign up to host a table and represent a country/region or volunteer to help, please email mcn@latinpcs.org.

You can also view the recording of the first three virtual discussions, see the full calendar of discussions this year, and RSVP for our next virtual discussion on April 20 on the last of our Latin Way principles, Serve the Common Good.

Cooper Bacchanalia

Party with Purpose!

Making friends, raising funds!

May 12-14 OR May 19-21

Thanks to those who have expressed interest in hosting one of our inaugural Bacchanalia parties! These are parent-hosted parties just for the Cooper Community. Each party has a theme and might have more than one family teaming up to host. Instead of selling tickets, we ask all guests to make a donation to the school. But really, the headline here is PARTY!

Please use the form below to indicate your interest in learning more, and Kate Cromwell, Director of Communications & Engagement, will follow up. (But don't worry, learning more is not the same as promising to host!)

COOPER VOLUNTEERS

THE COOPER EXPLAINER

End of Year Activities, Celebrations & Schedule

Though it seems like a ways off now, we want to share a sense of what to expect at the end of this school year.

You will start to see changes in our daily and weekly routine after Memorial Day (May 29). While our students in 5 and 6 will not sit for final exams as they will in later years at Cooper, we will have a push to close out Q4 by the end of the first week of June.

The next week is when the fun gets going! Starting Monday, June 5, students will have several special activity days, including:
  • Monday-Tuesday, June 5-6th - Regular school days; no tutorial or MAGIS
  • Wednesday, June 7th - Field Day @ Trinity University (no classes, no tutorial, no MAGIS)
  • Thursday, June 8th - All students on parent-led field trips
  • Friday, June 9th - Cooper Valediction (our final assembly for the year for students and faculty); Dismissal at 12:15 pm - LAST DAY of 2022-23!
We will share more details about our last week of school, including the daily schedule and a call for volunteers for both Field Day and the field trips. Please mark your calendars now and watch for more to come!
