A word from our Director
Spring is on its way and is an exciting time in education for renewal, rejuvenation, and reflection. February brought our first in-person AoE members meeting in nearly 3 years and the first one ever since I've become the Academy's director! It was wonderful to see so many educators together in one space sharing updates about all the great work our academy members and committees have been up to. It was also a treat to welcome our new Associate Dean for Faculty Promotions and Career Development to our meeting to discuss her vision and how the Academy can be a partner to support academic promotion for our educators. In other exciting news, for our many UME and GME educators, we cheered on our mentees, students, residents, and training programs participating in the Match. In this issue of our newsletter, we share with you many opportunities to participate in Academy offerings to advance your skills across multiple domains in education. We also hope that you will share these opportunities with your colleagues so that they may also enhance their skills as educators. As always, if you have ideas or insights to advance the mission of the Academy, I invite you to reach out to me or any other member of our Academy leadership team. Keep reading, learning, and teaching, and share your passion for education with a colleague this month!  -  Abby (Abby Spencer, MD, MS)

Academy Impact

The impact of Academy programming & grant funding reaches far & wide throughout the WUSM community. Please help us in celebrating the following achievement from ’20-‘22 Loeb Teaching Fellowship recipient, Dr. Michelle Miller-Thomas.

I used the Loeb Fellowship to create an integrated longitudinal radiology curriculum for medical students in the new Gateway Curriculum. The radiology curriculum has been successfully implemented in all three Phases of Gateway, teaching students foundational skills in radiology sequenced appropriately with the material taught in their modules or clerkships to allow all students to appropriately utilize medical imaging in the care of their patients and interpret common imaging studies themselves. Students are conversant with the scope of medical imaging and gain an understanding of the patient's experience in the radiology department by the end of Module 1. Throughout the remainder of Phase 1 students study specific applications within the modules and learn radiographic anatomy. Students dive deeper into the role of medical imaging in diagnostic reasoning and clinical care during the clerkships. With the launch of Phase 3, we are seeing students utilize these radiology skills as they gain more independence in caring for patients in their Advanced Clinical Rotations and explore additional areas of medicine in electives. The Loeb Fellowship allowed me to have the time to develop the radiology curriculum with the Module and Clerkship directors so that the students experience a cohesive and comprehensive curriculum in radiology with opportunities for spiral learning and frequent clinical application.” Michelle Miller-Thomas, ’20-’22 Loeb Fellow

Promotions for Educators Workshop

Educators play an essential role in supporting the scientific and patient care missions of academic medical centers. Despite their crucial role in training the next generation of scientists and clinicians, academic advancement is often slower for educators than for other faculty. Increased clinical productivity demands and financial stressors at academic medical centers add to the existing challenges faced by educators. This workshop will discuss progress in promotions criteria to support educators to more successfully navigate the promotions process. Educators’ products are diverse, and publication may not always be the primary currency. This workshop will share tips on how best to capture the impact of your teaching and medical education scholarship as well as the importance of developing a niche, mentorship and sponsorship, skill building, and developing a robust educator portfolio.
Workshops are scheduled for Tuesday, June 6th, 4pm -5:30pm and Wednesday, June 21st, 4PM - 5:30pm. Registration details to come.

In Our Words: Connection, A Storytelling Event

Bernard Becker Library and the SOM Office of Education are hosting a storytelling event. Medical students, residents, fellows, faculty, and staff are invited to this in-person event to hear stories of growth, insight, bravery, wisdom, and vulnerability. This event aims to build community and connection among physician trainees, faculty and staff.

Storytelling normalizes experiences and makes us all feel a little less alone. It can improve overall well-being and reduce the burnout that many experience. Friends and family are welcome. This event will be held at Third Degree Glass Factory.
More information and stories can be submitted here.

Monthly Member Meeting Notes

We had a wonderful February in-person meeting at which Associate Dean for Faculty Promotions and Career Development, Renee Shellhaas, MD, MS shared the goals of her office and how the Academy can work in tandem with her office towards mutual success.

2023 Schedule

Teaching Pearl

Many educators think that they have to have a very formal educational delivery method, when in reality in our work environments that is not always achievable. Teaching points can be short, in-the-moment, from experience, or scenario based from your memory. When the clinical environment is busy, you can still achieve teachable moments, such as asking "What do you want to work on for this _________ (procedure, case, patient encounter, etc)?" and focus on that part of the encounter. If things are really crazy, don't ignore the learner (even though it is easy in critical situations), just engage them in some way and they will find a teachable moment! Submitted by Shelby Dickison, MD, Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology
