Headmasters Message

“A View From The Top”

One of the great privileges of a Headmaster is the unique opportunity to witness, in a global sense, all the activities and events over time in a school.

At the end of this week, I reflected that Sacred Heart College has a deep wealth of student talent, community spirit, staff engagement and cultural richness. Importantly, our Catholic Character and Marist charism is seamlessly interwoven in all of it. This is some of what I witnessed:
  • Year 8 Camp at Shakespear Lodge where boys learnt the meaning of brotherhood, tolerance, resilience, self-sacrifice and having fun without the need for devices or internet
  • Athletics day where school and house spirit were clearly on display
  • FiaFia night where Māori and Pasifika students celebrated their culture and language with passion and pride
  • The Year 13 Retreats where students mutually reflected on their relationship with Christ, one another and their families
  • The Scholars Assembly where our outstanding academic boys were acknowledged and honoured for their achievement
  • Boys who rallied around their mates to support them in a time of loss
  • Large numbers of boys voluntarily attending Mass in the Chapel at lunchtime
Young men in New Zealand often receive a great deal of negative public and media attention. Whilst we acknowledge the legitimacy of this, it is important to balance it with the fact that most young men make a positive and worthwhile contribution to their school and community. All the above bear witness to this. The young men of Sacred Heart enjoy a holistic education with Christ at the centre. This is what our founder St Marcellin Champagnat had as his vision.

Open Day

I wish to thank all the parents and students who attended our Open Day on Wednesday. We appreciate you get only one chance of a high-quality Catholic education for your son. The high numbers attending is, I believe, an endorsement that what we offer at Sacred Heart meets the expectations of parents. Unfortunately, a limit on our school roll and an enrolment scheme prevent us from accepting all who want a Catholic Marist education for their boys.

Patrick Walsh
Headmaster/Tumuaki

Special Character

Lenten Appeal

In times past, we were asked for self-denial, to ‘give something up’ for Lent. While still a worthy thing to do, the students were also encouraged to also ‘take something on’ for the season. The recent flooding and cyclone which has caused so much destruction in many parts of the country, and the devastation for those affected by the earthquake in Turkey, provide a great opportunity for us to pick up Jesus’ call to almsgiving. The Lenten appeal at school and the Catholic Caring Foundation of the Bishop of Auckland, Steve Lowe are raising funds for those in need. If you can assist with financial help, it will be gratefully received and well-focussed in delivery. Donations can be made through the Sacred Heart College Young Vinnies, which will then be forwarded to Caritas and the Catholic Caring Foundation. Account details: 03-0104-0914050-00. Please include in the Reference – Lenten Appeal.

Year 7 and Year 9 Father and Son Mass and Breakfasts

We know how much these events are cherished by our community and the importance of Fathers and Sons gathering for prayer and sharing in food. The 2023 dates were initially planned for Friday 17 and 24 March respectively, however, we now need to reschedule these to Term 2. As soon as we can confirm the new dates we will publish them on our online calendar and inform parents. Thank you for your understanding.

Year 7 Plaques

The Pillars for 2023 are Family Spirit - Whanaungatanga; and Loyalty and Pride - Tuturutanga me te ihi. During Thursday's assembly, our Year 7 classes were presented with a plaque engraved with the Pillars for this year, which will be placed in each Year 7 Homeroom. This is a reminder to our students every day of what guides and inspires us. Each of our Year 7 classes have the support of a Year 13 student, with Deputy Prefect Dominic Kelleher as the Prefect team leader for Year 7.

Young Vinnies

Our Young Vinnies met with the Auckland Vinnies Leaders this week for some training and planning.

PPTA & NZEI Teacher Strike - Thursday 16 March

Due to a planned teacher strike organised by the Post Primary Teachers' Association (PPTA) and New Zealand Educational Institute, the College will be closed to students on Thursday, 16 March.
An email has been sent to all parents today, including information regarding the Hostel.

Pastoral Care

SHC Tuckshop

A reminder about the two convenient lunch ordering initiatives available from our tuckshop.
Lunch Orders - visit lunchorders.co.nz, register by following the instructions to set up an account, place an order, and your son collects his lunch from the SHC tuckshop.
Txt My Lunch - go to txtmylunch.co.nz and choose if you want to text or email and print a tuckshop voucher for your son. The voucher can be simply scanned at the tuckshop and your son will be able to choose from one of the combos.

Parking on surrounding streets at pick up

We ask please for those picking up students after school to be courteous to our residential neighbours. Do not park over driveways or block entrances to private properties as it becomes a frustration to our neighbours. We appreciate it can be very busy and congested at the end of the school day, but it is important to be respectful of those who live close to the College.

Rail Network Rebuild - Important Information

Students who currently use the stations and trains impacted by RNR Stage 2 will soon need to temporarily change the way they get to school. Please refer to the following important information and options available to you.

Station Closures and changes for trains - 20 March 2023 to January 2024

Cultural

FiaFia Night

We celebrated a fanstastic evening on Monday as 55 students from Year 9 to 13 performed at the annual Fiafia night. It has been three years since the last school FiaFia evening performance, so this was an event all students were looking forward to. The Samoan group performed a Sasa (Action dance), Pese (Samoan songs/hymns), Fa’ataupati (slap dance) and Taualuga (traditional Samoan dance).
Both Kapa Haka groups joined together for the opening of the Fiafia evening. Their performance was a haka powhiri, to welcome the extended whanau back to SHC after the break, followed by a weaponry display and school haka to bless our Tongan and Samoan brothers for the competition at Polyfest for this year.
The 2023 Tongan group proudly led by Tonga Helu, Flawless Lokeni and Liam Tonga'uiha, showed their pride as they prepare for this year's Polyfest performance. A group of 36 students made the community proud and were able to reflect and improve on their two performances (mako & ma'ulu'ulu).
A huge thank you to staff, tutors, students, parents and families who supported our three culture groups on Monday night. All of our boys are looking forward to performing at Polyfest this Saturday.
Please visit our website to view all photos from this wonderful evening, celebrating our Māori and Pacifika students.

ASB Polyfest

The Auckland Secondary Schools Māori & Pacific Islands Cultural Festival is back again this weekend, celebrating 48 Years across six cultural stages (Maori, Samoa, Tonga, Niuean, Cook Islands and Diversity). If you would like to watch the livestreaming of these events please click here.

Sport

SHC House Athletics Day – Fun in the Sun

It was a scorcher of a day, and the boys were totally on fire last Friday as they ran, jumped, and threw themselves into everything going on in this massive celebration of sport, school spirit, and students striving for athletic success. Three years passed since our last Athletics Day and the boys showed that they were ready to enjoy another fantastic celebration of sporting performance together with their peers.
Led by an outstanding Year 13 leadership group, the boys got fully involved and tried their hand at everything on offer, whether it was amongst the Championship events or the ‘have-a-go’ Non-Champs, everyone could add points to their house tally. At the end of the day, it was Lenihan House who took the honours.
Congratulations to all who took part and a special ‘all the best’ shout out to the 51 boys who have used this opportunity to qualify through to the College Sport Zone Champs on Tuesday 21 March at Trusts Stadium in Henderson.
Special Congratulations to our overall Athletics Champions for 2023:
Matt Schuler (Senior Boys), Charlie Richardson (Intermediate Boys), Henry Moore (Junior Boys), Liam Martin (Year 8), Huxley Fowler (Year 7).
And to our Runner's up:
Matt Foley (Senior Boys), Max Morgan (Intermediate Boys), Tom McLean (Junior Boys), Max Riordan (Year 8), Benedict Wimslett (Year 7).

Rowing

The Sacred Heart Rowers had a hugely successful weekend at the Head of Harbour Auckland Championships on Saturday 4 March. Sacred Heart took out the top Boys School Title. The SHC crews won 9 division 1 gold medals, and 3 division 1 silver medals,  with the Under 18 boys taking out all classes.

The U18 seniors won Gold in the Singles, Double Scull, The Pair Oar, The Quad Sculls and the Coxed Four. There simply isn’t another medal they could have won. As far as we know, there has never been a school that has won all the Auckland senior titles in both sculling and sweep classes.
The novices won the Novice eight, and four, as well as the U15 doubles. The event of the day at any rowing regatta is the coveted Under 18 - 8. It is always highly contested and gathers a good crowd. Rowers line the banks, yelling and cheering and it was no different on Saturday at Head of Harbour Auckland Champs. Our boys went in as the underdogs having only rowed this boat at one other regatta this season. SHC came out on top beating Kings and Grammar. This is only the 4th time Sacred Heart has ever won this title, the last time being 75 years ago.
We wish the boys all the best for the North Island Rowing Championships this weekend.
