The Fantasticks

The Matthews Opera House and Arts Center is excited to announce The Fantasticks, a musical by Tom Jones under direction of Casey S. Hibbert with musical direction provided by Connie Hubbard.
“Try To Remember” a time when this romantic charmer wasn’t enchanting audiences around the world. The Fantasticks is the longest-running musical in the world and with good reason: at the heart of its breathtaking poetry and subtle theatrical sophistication is a purity and simplicity that transcends cultural barriers. The result is a timeless fable of love that manages to be nostalgic and universal at the same time.
Audiences have six opportunities to catch The Fantasticks on the Matthews stage: Friday and Saturday evenings at 7 pm, April 14, 15, 21 and 22; and Sunday matinees at 2 pm, April 16 and 23.

SUPER PROUD teacher moment! Raider Orchestra alum Alex LeVake (cello) stuns in the UNL Symphony’s concerto concert! She is directed by my former Southwest Middle School violinist turned bassist Kate Mathews and the oboe soloist is recent grad (and former cello player) Ethan Palmreuter! Bassist Ben Wheeler rounds out the Raiders alumni. Lots of other Rapid City folks are in the orchestra and on staff at the church where this concert was held. Very proud!!!

Good Things Are In Store For 2023!

The Allied Arts have been busy rebuilding since the pandemic.

We are excited to announce that we have partnered with the Black Hills Community Foundation to create an Arts endowment right here in our own backyard!

Our fund with the Black Hills Area Community Foundation will create peace of mind with an annual source of support for our organizations, and it will provide perpetual support for our nonprofit grants, individuals with art projects, and scholarships for art students.

None of this could happen without your partnership. Thank you for being such a vital part of sharing the Arts with our community. If you can, a gift will help us start 2023 well-funded.
Gifts to the Allied Arts are tax-deductible and will make the Arts available for even more people in the new year.

A gift today helps support our mission for decades to come!

Right Now, donations will be matched at a 4-to-1 rate, and Allied Arts can receive up to $10,000 in matching funds from your Donation!

The Family of Verle (Fritzi) Goehring has established an endowment through the Allied Arts in the loving memory of this wonderful woman.

Verle Bernice Shurtleff was born October 30, 1922, in Olney, Illinois. She lived on the family farm in Bone Gap, Illinois with her parents Clarence Ellsworth Shurtleff and Harriet Charlotte (Williams) Shurtleff, and sister Maurice Amelia. Verle attended Bone Gap High School, where she was in the choir and played tuba in the band. After graduation, she began nursing school in Chicago, where she met Oscar Goehring from Lowry, South Dakota, who was serving in the Army Air Force. He gave her the endearing name of Fritzi, and it stayed with her for life. They married at the First Presbyterian Church in Rapid City, South Dakota, on June 11, 1943.

Fritzi was a volunteer Grey Lady at the hospital and was active in 4H, The Extension Club, Bridge Club, and the Rapid City Motel Association. She was a life member of AAUW, which awarded her “The Woman of Worth Award.” She and Oscar were founding and session members of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

After Oscar died in 1970, Fritzi continued teaching. She filled her summers working at the 1880 train as the Office Manager. She obtained her real estate license and worked for Century 21. Upon retiring from teaching, she operated gift shops in Keystone, and later, two shops in Hill City. In 1991 she established and managed Travel Connection with her daughter Linda. She became a resident at West Hills Village and became involved by serving as a volunteer and board member.

Because of Fritzi’s love of the arts her family has established this fund to support student and senior art opportunities through our Share-a-Seat program.

Memorials may be directed to the
Allied Arts Fund, PO Box 4080, Rapid City, SD 57709.
