Washington Wine Month Special Offer
Does this look like a déja vu to you? This was our December 2020 special offer and we still have these wines to offer as they age and evolve. I went looking for something that would make me happy and really impress you for Washington Wine Month and this is it. Even though it's a redo offer there were plenty of you that did not take advantage in 2020. Don't let it go by this time especially if Cabernet Sauvignon is your varietal of choice.
Let's dig into these wines a bit. They were all sourced from the same section of Catherine's Block of Dineen Vineyard. This vineyard block is located away from the winery and housing complex of Dineen. You need to get a special tour to see the vines that live right next to the Rosa Canal. Ryan is standing on the bank of the Canal in this shot of Catherine's Block. The rows were planted in 2000 and have considerable age in the vintages we are presenting. Grape vines tend to settle into a cycle of producing more flavorful wines once they hit 15 years of age and our 2015 is just that milestone. An interesting challenge will be to taste these wines with the vintage heat and chemistry in mind. 2015 and 2016 are very similar with respect to weather, but 2016 has an edge on intensity. The 2015 vintage produced a softer more approachable tannin structure that you can see right away. If I were to suggest a tasting order, I'd place the 2017 first followed by the 2015, and the 2016 in last place because this vintage produced such intense wines. All of these wines are overflowing with black cherry flavors and aromas. This has to be the most recognizable character of Catherine's Block Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2017 is the highest pH and the lowest acid of the three and shows a softer more delicate finish. As this vintage matures, we are seeing more nuanced complexity around the edges. I'm usually partial to intensity, but as I mature I'm appreciating more elegance in my wines. With more time in bottle, 2017 might overtake my appreciation for 2016.
This month's Special Offer is a tribute to the dominant wine of Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon. We think you will appreciate how well this vertical represents the Cabernet from Dineen and how much each vintage shows similar character from this vineyard and particularly, Catherine's Block.
