Hello Everyone,
Thanks to everyone who spent time with us or :Nota Bene wines during Washington Wine Month. We so appreciate your support for local wines and agriculture and all of the businesses created around our home grown industries. To everyone who participated in Taste Washington we can imagine the efforts in trying to sample all the food and wine was a major exercise in compromise. It was just overwhelming but so much fun to be able to do so again!

We are just barely squeaking out a notice of a trip to France with :Nota Bene in 2024. Please read that section of the newsletter and join us on another memorable trip.

Remember that we will deliver 3 + bottles free of charge to the Seattle Metro Area. Let us know if you are missing our wines and would like delivery. We wish everyone a wonderful 2023 enjoying our wines with friends and family. Hope we see you soon.

Washington Wine Month Special Offer
Washington Wine Month Special Offer
Does this look like a déja vu to you? This was our December 2020 special offer and we still have these wines to offer as they age and evolve. I went looking for something that would make me happy and really impress you for Washington Wine Month and this is it. Even though it's a redo offer there were plenty of you that did not take advantage in 2020. Don't let it go by this time especially if Cabernet Sauvignon is your varietal of choice.

Let's dig into these wines a bit. They were all sourced from the same section of Catherine's Block of Dineen Vineyard. This vineyard block is located away from the winery and housing complex of Dineen. You need to get a special tour to see the vines that live right next to the Rosa Canal. Ryan is standing on the bank of the Canal in this shot of Catherine's Block. The rows were planted in 2000 and have considerable age in the vintages we are presenting. Grape vines tend to settle into a cycle of producing more flavorful wines once they hit 15 years of age and our 2015 is just that milestone. An interesting challenge will be to taste these wines with the vintage heat and chemistry in mind. 2015 and 2016 are very similar with respect to weather, but 2016 has an edge on intensity. The 2015 vintage produced a softer more approachable tannin structure that you can see right away. If I were to suggest a tasting order, I'd place the 2017 first followed by the 2015, and the 2016 in last place because this vintage produced such intense wines. All of these wines are overflowing with black cherry flavors and aromas. This has to be the most recognizable character of Catherine's Block Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2017 is the highest pH and the lowest acid of the three and shows a softer more delicate finish. As this vintage matures, we are seeing more nuanced complexity around the edges. I'm usually partial to intensity, but as I mature I'm appreciating more elegance in my wines. With more time in bottle, 2017 might overtake my appreciation for 2016.

This month's Special Offer is a tribute to the dominant wine of Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon.  We think you will appreciate how well this vertical represents the Cabernet from Dineen and how much each vintage shows similar character from this vineyard and particularly, Catherine's Block. Here are the three exciting wines we are offering in our March Special Offer:

2015 :NB Cabernet Dineen Vineyard - 91 Points Jeb Dunnuck and a Gold Medal at Tri-Cities Winefest
2016 :NB Cabernet Dineen Vineyard - 91+ Points Jeb Dunnuck
2017 :NB Cabernet Dineen Vineyard

Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra Gala and Concerts
Some of you may have heard that :Nota Bene co-owner Carol is on the board of Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra and a big fan of this outstanding local band. Our appreciation of local jazz and SRJO was cultivated when our son Ryan studied under Scott Brown in the Roosevelt High School Jazz Band. We have continued to grow this musical enthusiasm over the years and Carol's work with the board has grown with it. She is asking that you join her for a night at the SRJO Gala and/or attend one of the two concerts left in the SRJO season. Please write to Carol if you would like to seated at her Gala table. These Gala's are fun and full of food, drinks, and music.

A Rhône Cruise in 2024
Hello Fellow Travelers,
We are planning another trip to France in April 2024 and hope a good number of you will be excited to join us in cruising the Rhône on a Scenic boat. Check out the agenda of our planned trip that begins in Lyon and heads north on the River Sôane to Mâcon then reverses course and follows the current downstream through Lyon, Vienne, Viviers, Avignon, and Tarascon. There will be much to see and do at these ports of call. Scenic does such a great job with tours and guides. We don't think you want to miss this trip.

We are also working on a possible pre-cruise trip to Beaujolais wine region just south of Mâcon. We have been exploring the Cru Appellations with regularity over the past several years and think this region has so much to offer especially the lesser know varietal gamey noir. This NYC wine shop does a really good job with Cru descriptions and locations. If that's not enough, this reference has even more to say about history and winemaking and has great maps.

In the photo above we are looking upstream on the Rhône River from Le Pont Saint Benezet and below a 90 degree turn gives you this view of the Papal Palace in Avignon.

Please let us know if you are interested in joining us for an April 2024 adventure in France.

Best wishes,
Tim and Carol
