Women on the Front Lines

This month we asked some of our 41 women contributors what being an animal photojournalist means to them.

Watch our short video to hear what they had to say, and read more about these brave, talented women here.

We've been hearing a lot about bird flu - but what does it look like? Since last year our photojournalists have been documenting this outbreak in the US, UK, Canada, Czechia and Poland. Use these visuals to highlight the unavoidable connection between intensive animal farming and disease transmission happening right now.

"This is not a space to create a story, the story is in front of you. You just have to be observant and aware to catch those moments within the chaos." -S. Chakrabarti

S. Chakrabarti is a freelance media professional based in India who focuses on stories of animals, conservation and communities. Her work has been published and exhibited on both national and international platforms. We chatted with her about documenting animal stories and her recent work, which looks at India’s shrimp industry from source to sale.

Photo of the Month: Rescue in Türkiye

HAYTAP Animal Rights Federation and Istanbul Fire Department team members carry a mother dog from inside a damaged building. The team rescued the mother dog and her litter of puppies five days after the earthquakes struck the country. Photo: Ozan Acidere / We Animals Media
On February 6, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Türkiye and Syria, tragically killing more than 57,300 people. In addition to the loss of human life was the loss of animal life, with many companion animals trapped underneath crumbling buildings. Soon local and international organizations were rescuing animals, reuniting them with their families who had already lost so much, and providing medical care. Our contributor Ozan Acidere was there to document their heroic efforts.

Meet the Team: Vinyse Barber

Calm, cool and collected. While some may think of the 1967 Rolling Stones smash hit when they hear these three words, we think of Vinyse Barber, who works behind-the-scenes to ensure operations run smoothly and that our team is equipped for success.

Transfarming Switzerland Selected for Fesitval Screening

Transfarming Switzerland, one of our latest short films, has been selected for screening at the Setting Sun Festival, the premier film festival in Melbourne's West. The film documents one woman’s unconventional approach: to work with – not against – animal farmers. Sarah Heiligtag transforms animal farms into vegan farms and animal sanctuaries across Switzerland and neighbouring countries.

In Case You Missed It:

The annual Rattlesnake Roundup in Sweetwater, Texas, took place this March. In its six decades the event has needlessly killed over 250,000 wild rattlesnakes. The festival's activities include live beheadings, participatory skinning demonstrations, fried snake eating contests, and a Miss Snake Charmer beauty pageant. Of note: A similar annual rattlesnake roundup in south Georgia changed its format this year to celebrate living snakes without the killing.
