Secure your online presence with SchoolDNS – a free new service

Remembering to renew your school’s or kura’s domain registration can seem like a low-priority task. Nonetheless it’s an important task – a school’s website going offline or staff and students no longer able to receive emails – can cause disruption and headaches for already busy schools.

To help with this challenge, the Ministry of Education has set up a fully-funded new domain name system (DNS) registration service, called SchoolDNS. It offers DNS registration and hosting for schools and kura. By centralising the registration and renewal process of domain names, as well as covering the annual DNS registration and hosting costs, the Ministry aims to increase the level of security and control that schools and kura have over their domain name(s).

Safer Technology for Schools – a new service in development

When choosing software products to use in your school or kura, it can be hard to know where to find impartial advice. One of the biggest risks to a school is poor security or privacy practices in the software used, known as supply chain risk. It’s a hard risk to mitigate, since you can’t see the privacy and security processes that have been baked into the software by looking at their website.

Some software providers have reviewed their product against Australian and New Zealand privacy and security standards. Safer Technology for Schools (ST4S) gives an overview of digital products used in schools and kura and provides a report on whether these products meet privacy and security standards.

Help us to identify software products that need ST4S assessment

If you are considering purchasing software or currently use software that does not have an ST4S badge or report, contact us to register your interest in that software. We are working with suppliers to participate in the ST4S assessment process but need your help to identify and prioritise products. You can contact our team at: digital.services@education.govt.nz
