Have I ever talked about how the Traditional mead came to be?
Back in February 2018, we first launched the Apple Mead and the Coffee Mead, the reasons for which will formulate the content of another newsletter. Maybe.
But the reason we didn't start with a traditional mead right away is that we were worried about introducing a honey-forward beverage to the Indian market—it just hadn't been done before (well, not for a few thousand years).
The first traditional mead we released was made with Ajwain honey and multi-floral honey - still in the old Mm branding and we launched it on the 1st of June at Malaka Spice, Pune.
We even got a whole bunch of ‘traditional’ kulhads handmade in the shape of a chalice.
Initially, we planned for the traditional mead to be a meadLAB small batch release, but it got a surprisingly good response, so we made it a flagship product that is always available. During the rebranding process, Nikhil More of Junglegym Studio designed the new label, which is filled with symbolism.
There’s a tonne of symbolism on the new label -
The satellite on the label is Aryabhata, India's first satellite, named after Aryabhata, the ancient Indian mathematician-astronomer who first conceptualized "zero" in the 5th century (the modern symbol of which kind of looks like the moon, eh?).
Effectively, old India meets new India - Aryabhata, the astronomer and Aryabhata, the satellite.
And, old India meets new India -the meads we make - carbonated and contemporary contrasted against ancient Indian meads, now lost to the fog of history.
So there you have it, the story of how our Traditional Mead came to be. We're thrilled to see the response it has received so far and can't wait for more people to try it.
