March 2023

A letter from the President:

Dear Central OH NLAPW Members,

I am reaching out to you because I am concerned about the dwindling attendance at our meetings, particularly those where we have brought in guest speakers.  I know we all have busy lives and there are legitimate reasons for bowing out on occasion.  I am not seeking to admonish you, but to understand how we can do better.  The Central OH NLAPW officers and I will be contacting each of you in the next few weeks to find out how we could improve our meeting times/days/locations, etc. so that we can increase our attendance at meetings and events.  Thank you in advance for your assistance and cooperation in helping us to meet the needs of all our members.

I also wanted to let you know that the Central OH NLAPW officers have voted to increase our regional dues from $10 to $20 per year.  If you attended our Holiday Luncheon and 90thAnniversary Celebration, you would have heard that our regional dues have been the same since the 1980s!  We use these dues to pay for our website, directory, guest speakers, brochures, gift cards for member speakers, mailing and postage, etc… and you can imagine that $10 doesn’t go as far as it used to!  Thank you for your support and understanding.  Please look for the upcoming deadline of our national and regional dues in this newsletter.

Lastly, you will also read in this newsletter about some upcoming opportunities for all our National Members to participate in an exhibition this fall and a series of events next Spring for our National Biennial here in Columbus.  We are in the process of recruiting volunteers for both an Exhibition Committee and Biennial Committee.  Please contact me at artatdawn123@gmail.com if you are willing to help.

I hope you are enjoying the Spring weather we are having!  I look forward to seeing you soon!

Sandra K-Horn- A Path to Becoming an Indie Author

It was such an honor and privilege to listen to the celebrated Ohio Author, Sandra K-Horn, speak to us at the March meeting at the Columbus Main Metropolitan Library!  Sandra spoke of how she began writing, sparked by a few pinnacle episodes as a Middle School Teacher.  She went on to tell us about the other books she has written, learning (through trial and error) to write and publish, and sharing many useful resources.  Thank you, Sandra, for your wealth of advise and candor.  If you missed this wonderful event please go to Sandra's website at https://sandrakhorn.net/ to find out more about her and how to purchase her books.

Please send a check made out to CENTRAL OH NLAPW to Darlene Yeager Torre, 5361 Castle Pines, Columbus, OH 43235 or bring it with you to the April 4 meeting.

An Opportunity For All Members!!
Dawn and Peg were looking for a place to exhibit their many collaborations together over the years.  Dawn remembered The Martin DePorres Center near the campus of Dominican University and contacted their Director.  The director was interested in both allowing Dawn and Peg to exhibit their collaborations along a main hallway, but also to allow the Pen Women to exhibit their work in the St. Catherine of Siena Meeting Room with very large walls (with a hanging system) and some shelving units- and seating for 200 people!  Our Members of all disciplines will be able to exhibit at The Martin dePorres Center in September-October of this fall.  We will also be allowed to hold a reception there which can be open to the public.
If you would like to be part of the exhibition committee for this and our Biennial Shows, please contact Dawn at artatdawn123@gmail.com.

Bev Goldie a few new things on her radar:
-  The recipient of a GCAC Individual Professional Artist's Grant (Her 4th!  Way to go, Bev!)
~ Received the green light to make two giant reproductions of one of her abstract encaustics for an office lobby - each to be 6ft. x 9ft. tall!!!  She'll have lots of pictures once they're installed!! (Photo attached of the chosen work on a similar wall color from my ArtRoom App.)
~ Was accepted to be in the James Cancer Hospital's gallery in 2024
- Will be sharing and demonstrating many small works in May in a funded "ArtBox Takeover" through the Dublin Arts Council.  Her Artbox is next to the Dublin Village Tavern.

In regard to the Biennial, "Darlene and I are getting very excited about all of the surprise additions we are exploring for the 2024 Biennial.  We want our national sister members to be proud of our efforts, and we also want them to be impressed with Columbus, Ohio! Soon we'll be asking for volunteers to help with certain aspects of the big event, such as soliciting some businesses for items needed for the huge biennial art reception.  We also want to get in-kind donations for goodie bags for guests, prizes for winners and assistance with our own loft gallery collaborative exhibition.   Once we get closer to the event, we will certainly need and want assistance with receiving art at the Cultural Art Center and unpacking it too.  We will have the first peek at all of the work!!"

BTW- Through Darlene's and Bev's hard work, the Central OH NLAPW was able to obtain a program grant through the Greater Columbus Arts Council to help fund programs and special additions to the National Exhibition here in Columbus at the Cultural Arts Center for the 2024 Biennial.  Our thanks go out to them and the Greater Columbus Arts Council for their funding and support!

Darlene Yeager-Torre Is also a recipient of a grant from the Greater Columbus Arts Council's Individual Artist Award!!
