Six months ago, we announced the winners of our 2022 LA2050 Grants Challenge.

Now, we are sharing updates on their incredible work to make LA better for all!

You voted for the issues that mattered most to you, and our winners are implementing their solutions. They are working on a wide range of projects
protecting vulnerable tenants, helping immigrants flourish, creating local jobs, and much, much more. Here are four highlights:
Black Women for Wellness photo
Black Women for Wellness has knocked on doors and distributed flyers at events across Los Angeles County to help ensure low-income Black women can gain access to healthy food through CalFresh. To date, BWW has reached approximately 2,500 people with this critical information.
The Theodore Payne Foundation's California Native Plant Certification Program is training landscape professionals to save water, restore habitats, and bring the beauty of the natural world into our communities. Theodore Payne anticipates 250 students will complete the program this grant cycle.
Young Women's Freedom Center photo
Young Women’s Freedom Center launched its first cohort of Transform Your Hustle, focusing on young mothers ages 16 to 25 years old. Participants learn financial literacy, how to set professional and personal goals, and how to prioritize themselves in motherhood and work.
Flavors from Afar photo
Flavors from Afar received the MICHELIN Bib Gourmand designation and was recognized as an LA Times Top 101 Restaurant. Flavors From Afar is also celebrating four chefs who are launching their own catering businesses as well as one securing a six-figure job placement.

My favorite Los Angeles places and spaces...
PLAY: When I want to get active, I look for any LA Citywide Aquatics pool near me. They're all over Los Angeles. My current favorite spot is the Cheviot Hills Pool.

CREATE: South LA Cafe is a BIPOC-owned business that focuses on engaging and serving the community in a variety of ways. They have done an incredible job at fostering community through food giveaways, vaccination pop-ups, and more.

CONNECT: I love volunteering through 5+2 Ministries. There are a variety of events we do to give back to the community around Eagle Rock as well as the communities many of our families come from back in Egypt. It facilitates an important aspect of community for those who have immigrated and those who are first/second gen.

LEARN: Algebra Project and The People's Project L.A. work in the HEET LAUSD community to improve math literacy for underserved students; I’m always in admiration of the work they do!

LIVE: TACO Inc is a local organization that aims to combat drug overdoses among young adults by providing access to comprehensive resources. The work they do is essential to public health.
