Active transport submission to Darebin Council budget

Streets Alive Darebin recently made a submission to Darebin Council in the lead-up to its 2023-24 financial year budget.

Our proposal focused on design and installation of accessible tram stops and general streetscape improvements for High St Northcote/Thornbury, north of Separation Street.

This section of High Street is home to a range of community services as well as a vibrant night and day dining precinct, so it’s imperative that all members of the Darebin community can access it safely and easily. A summary of our main arguments in favour of a new street design for High Street can be found on our Streets Alive Darebin website.

Our proposal is in keeping with Council’s refreshed Transport Strategy (2022), and also responds to the recent Your Streets, Your Say public consultation, which yielded requests for accessible tram stops, separated bicycle lanes and safer pedestrian crossings.

Pleasingly, the majority of submissions presented at the Council budget hearing related to active transport requests focused on making it easier and safer for families to ride bikes safely in their local neighbourhoods.

Some submissions focused on the quality of existing bike routes and lack of connections, as well as the cost efficiencies of investing in local bike routes to reduce the impact of heavier vehicles on local roads – a great way for the council to save on maintenance is to direct traffic onto roads designed to carry a higher volume of heavy vehicles.

Council budget – next steps

Council will release its proposed budget in May for further community consultation.
