Challengers Prevail in Greenport Village Elections

Greenport voters have spoken: Kevin Stuessi will be the new village mayor, and the board will have two new trustees: Planning Board members Patrick Brennan & Lily Dougherty-Johnson.

In all, 422 people cast ballots in person and 84 more sent in absentee ballots — about half of the registered voters in Greenport and far higher than the turnout in recent elections, as voters were galvanized by the initial disqualification of seven out of nine candidates by the village clerk.

The Suffolk County Water Authority held a ceremonial laying of the first pipe of the longest water main extension project in its history in Laurel on March 23, a $35 million, eight-mile-long pipeline designed to bring water from the Central Pine Barrens to the North Fork.

Kudos to the North Fork Community Theatre for embracing Bertolt Brecht’s “The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui” this spring. Everywhere we go, we hear a chorus of people saying they can’t believe they are able to see this kind of theater close to home, and the enthusiastic crowd at the Sunday matinee opening weekend bodes well for the willingness of the community at large to embrace this production.

New East End Congressman Nicholas LaLota introduced his first piece of legislation March 14, the Plum Island National Monument Act, under which Congress could protect the island from development by making it a National Monument.
