HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE LATEST EPISODE:
Leadership Lessons from IBM Trailblazer Ginni Rometty

 CULTIVATING THE "POWER OF ME"
  • The most important thing you can do to succeed as an individual is to develop a strong desire to keep learning — in every situation you find yourself in.

  • Growth and comfort can never co-exist. Pivot, pivot, pivot along the way, even if you're unsure about the outcome. Rometty says, "Unless I'm nervous, I'm never going to learn anything."

MATURING INTO "THE POWER OF WE"
  • "Good power" is like a pebble in water — it starts with what you can do for yourself, but scope and potency grow over time. As your influence grows, Rometty says, "Don't give up on societal change. It's not too big to fix."

  • Act in service of a mission, not in service to a person or organization. Personalize the success or failure.

  • The "power of we" has to deal with managing tension, with being respectful, with targeting progress instead of perfection (because perfection is polarizing).

 THE IMPORTANCE OF RESILIENCE
  • When you do hard, meaningful work, it doesn't always happen in a straight line and it doesn't always happen overnight.

  • Nurturing strong relationships & maintaining a good attitude will help you stay resilient.

  • Control what you can, compartmentalize where you can, and have conviction.

 VALUES-DRIVEN LEADERSHIP
  • In the long run, business gets a license to operate from society. Companies can do right by all stakeholders, and if you want real business longevity, you'll have to at least try.

  • "If society is at rest and democracy thrives, that is really better for my business. That's not woke; that's leading with a set of values that you believe in."

  • Inclusivity begins at the top, and you must authentically believe in its worth. Inclusivity is a choice you constantly make; it's about a culture, not a program.

Learn more about Rometty's career and leadership insights in her new book, Good Power: Leading Positive Change in Our Lives, Work, and World. Rometty told us, "My hope is that when people read it, it gives them confidence to do something really hard in a positive way."
