‘The present is the future.’ This is a basic mindfulness idea: how you are right now has a strong influence on how you will be next. If you get caught up in distressing thoughts in this moment the next moments are likely to be stressful. If you can cultivate a sense of calm awareness in this moment the next moments are likely to be calm.

Try: Remind yourself that ‘The present is the future’ when you catch yourself going over and over gloomy thoughts. This will make you aware that the quality of mind you bring to the present moment has an immediate  influence on future moments.

Try: “ … while you breathe in, you follow your in-breath from the beginning to the end.
