Olas Altas Saturday Market
Friends back in the states often ask us, “What do you do all day in Puerto Vallarta?” They have trouble picturing our life in PV or why we would choose to live here full-time. If you have spent time here, you know the answer. We are never at a loss for how to spend our days.
One of our favorites of the week is the Olas Altas Saturday Farmer’s market which is open every Saturday from November – April. The market is a kaleidoscope of colors and scents. We like to get there by 9 AM for two reasons, the crowds get shoulder to shoulder later, and the food lines are less long. We have our routine. We park the car in the garage under the Olas Altas park and bring our bright green La Comer bags to snag our goodies. The first stop is always bread, so fresh I can smell the loaves halfway to the booth. I just breathe in. Bread is my weakness. Then we are off to a booth of a woman who always says, “Good day, my lady.” She makes small quiche-like pies in aluminum foil pans like small chicken pot pies. They are flourless and made of corn. We like asparagus and gouda and spinach and cheese. She makes sweet ones as well but we are partial to the savory.
The vendors are friendly and quick to help people and seem so patient when the crowds get impatient. The bread and pastry lines are always the longest. The food court has every imaginable dish from Indian curry dishes cooked right there to Mexican dishes. I could go on and on. There are clothes, art, handmade items, purses, hand lotions, bronzes, honey, homemade pasta, flowers, and jewelry. Our guests love the market. This week our family is coming and one of the first requests will be asking if we can go to the market. We never tire of going and really enjoy taking friends there. No one comes home empty-handed.
One of the best parts of the market for me is seeing all the dogs. People bring their pets and gather with friends to chat or shop. It is heartwarming to see so many dogs that were clearly street dogs at one time, walking happily on leashes with their humans. Teaberry had a great time today. Many people wanted to pet him. He is becoming so much less afraid, and his tail was up as he pranced by my side, heeling. YAY. This is the first week, Teaberry enjoyed the market. In the past, his tail was down and he was so nervous, we stopped bringing him. Thanks to Noel, his trainer, those days are behind us. Living in PV is never boring! Friends and family needn’t worry!

PEACEAnimals makes an effort to serve every corner of the Banderas Bay region. Although many of our locations are well known and expected regularly, we do like to visit new areas, especially ones that express a strong need for our services. The first visit to any site is usually a bit chaotic unloading, setting up equipment, and organizing the space and logistics.
The vet team was especially patient and amenable making the most of conditions that were less than ideal. Local animal welfare organization "WUFF al rescate" was instrumental in organizing the campaign this week in Colonia Bicentenario in San Vicente and homeowner Rosie opened up her patio and courtyard for the clinic. Located by a shaded playground, next to a small chapel, it was a nice area for folks to wait for their pets with many choosing to stay around to help out. Crowds of children gathered around to see what was going on, and we were able to see Mass being held on Saturday morning at the Santisima Trinidad church. Natalie from Wuff al rescate was on hand to support the team and organized a fantastic group of volunteers including Fernando, Elliut, Gabriela, Cynthia, and Itzel. It was a busy and successful week and we had a chance to meet and serve another grateful community.

Desperately seeking used or new kennels for the animals during the clinic. We could use collars to provide to owners; PEACEAnimals has free leashes for owners. Towels and sheets also in very short supply. We also really could use volunteers to help with recovery at the clinics. If you'd be interested in volunteering or have any donations please contact John Whitten at WhatsApp +52 322-111-9419
