Thoughts to Ponder...
Some days there are high mountains and deep valleys. Yesterday was one of those days.
It is a quiet day in the office. At the end of the day, I go down to the Soup Kitchen to see how things are going and to support our volunteers, Alex and our guests. Coming down the stairs, I hear the beautiful notes of piano music. We now have four guests who are pianists and often provide live music for the dinner time.
Walking into the Parish Hall, things are bustling. It's the end of the month and our numbers tend to go up as money gets tight. Monday night we served over 100 meals; it seems as though we will easily hit that number again tonight.
Our volunteers are hard at work; Alex is going between the dishwasher and the convection oven; the latter used to cook juicy hamburgers and French fries, the meal of the night (along with salad and dessert of course!) Carol is dishing up the plates to order; Janet, Ed, Janine and Oscar are keeping an eye on the diners and making sure everyone is quickly fed; Herb keeps count of men, women, children and dogs.
As I look around the room, I smile and give thanks. People are sitting in groups, eating, talking, laughing. Our "Soup Kitchen" dogs are lying peacefully under the tables. The lovely piano music supports the warm atmosphere in the room on a cold and rainy night. It is a mountaintop high for sure.
Then I come home. The news is on and once again, I hear the words "Children killed; teachers killed. The shooter killed. Assault weapons used." The fall off the mountain comes quickly and hard. The valley is dark and unforgiving.
I think about writing only about the school shooting; I simply can't. I need to remind myself (and the reader) that we don't always live in the darkness of evil. Yes, the statistics are horrid: the number 1 cause of death for children is now school shootings, not accidents. There have been 13 school shootings already this year...a year only 13 weeks old. The valley is deep and dark. We do need to do something to protect our children but that discussion is for another time and place.
Then I remember we are about to go to a mountaintop on Sunday...the wonderful Palm Sunday procession where we laugh and sing and have a good time. Yet, before we walk back out into the world in utter silence at the end of our worship, we will descend into the dark valley of Holy Week. Our hope, the strength that will get us through Holy Week and any dark valley we find ourselves in, is the hope of Easter Sunday, the gift of God's unconditional and all powerful love.
So last night, I simply take a deep breath and offer prayers; prayers for those who are in deep grief tonight; prayers for those who the recent shooting brings back painful memories. I offer prayers of thanksgiving for our Soup Kitchen where so much good and light and love occur; a mountaintop experience for sure.
Let's stay in touch,
Betty+

UPCOMING EVENTS...
A Celebration of Life for Don Van Etten will take place on Saturday, April 1 at 2 p.m. here at St. Barnabas. All are invited to come and honor this wonderful child of God. The service will be broadcast over our YouTube Channel.
April Book Discussion and Dinner will be on Saturday, April 22 from 5 - 7 p.m. The book to read is The Sentence by Louise Erdrich. Ms Erdich is considered one of the most gifted, prolific, and challenging of contemporary Native American novelists. Born in 1954 in Little Falls, Minnesota, she grew up mostly in Wahpeton, North Dakota, where her parents taught at Bureau of Indian Affairs schools. Her fiction reflects aspects of her mixed heritage: German through her father, and French and Ojibwa through her mother. The Sentence was a nominee for Best Fiction 2021.
Watch for other activities and events as we continue to strengthen and build our community! Have an idea? Talk to a member of the Vestry or the Interim Rector.
