A LETTER FROM THE NEW CHAIR
Jura Slattery
Hello, Dear Garfield Heights Neighbors:
It is with great pleasure to share our revamp of our neighborhood newsletter. In the spirit of evolution, we want to ensure this communication is impactful for you so please share your feedback and suggestions of future topics.
As your Chair this year, the board and I are focused on a number of critical areas. They include:
- A commitment to increased communication and transparency in what the board does for the neighborhood and an encouragement for all of you to get involved in areas that interest you. We have committees that range from Art to Disaster Prep (and everything in-between). All you have to do is reach out and get involved in whatever way your schedule allows. We have also started giving monthly board meeting updates via video on our media platforms and we hope this helps you better understand where the board is focused and working for you.
- One strategic area of focus is to use some of the funds in our account to give back to our neighborhood and to those who need it most. Read on in this newsletter for more information on areas that are being considered. We welcome your suggestions as well.
- The board also recognizes the need to help prepare future GH board members for success. We will be documenting best practices of the past/current as well as standard operating procedures for the officers. We want to ensure the success of all board members in the years to come while allowing past board members to either move on to other things or take a break.
- We know how much our neighborhood enjoys the various events we host. We have worked to be more proactive by publishing events as early as possible so that you can schedule your very busy post-pandemic life around having some fun with your community. We look forward to seeing you at future events.
I'd like to thank the current board for their efforts as we head into our second quarter of service. The board is focused, energized and committed to making an impact this year, in a positive way, for you. We thank you all of our Garfield Heights neighbors for your support.

GHNA GIVES BACK
We want your feedback!
The Garfield Heights Neighborhood Association has experienced a budget surplus this year, and we want to use these additional funds to give back to our wonderful community. We are considering several options, including providing meals for the homeless, creating a community notice board, and sponsoring classes. Possible classes include gardening, CPR (for humans and pets!), cooking, and home maintenance.
We'd love to hear from you, as your input is invaluable in making our community a better place. To share your thoughts and ideas, please email us at info@garfieldheights.org

HOW TO DETER COYOTES
Coyotes are an unavoidable fact of life in Pasadena
Here are a few simple tricks to help mitigate the risk to yourself of your pets:
- Make your environment unwelcoming for coyotes. Trim your trees and shrubs to eliminate hiding places for them. Install coyote-proof fences or other deterrents like motion-activated lights or sprinklers.
- Do not leave food outside of your home. Coyotes are attracted to garbage, pet food, birdseed, compost, and fallen fruit. Secure your trash cans with ropes,
- Bring your animals inside at night or keep them in a secure enclosure. Coyotes are most active at dawn and dusk, and they may prey on small pets that roam freely outside.
- Make loud noises if you see a coyote near your home. This will help scare it away and teach it to avoid humans in the future.
- Practice hazing if you encounter a coyote that does not run away immediately when you make noise. Hazing is a method of discouraging coyotes from becoming habituated to humans by using aggressive gestures and actions that make them feel threatened. Some examples of hazing are:
- Yelling and waving your arms
- Throwing sticks or stones at the coyote
- Spraying the coyote with water from a hose
- Using an air horn, whistle, bell, or other loud device
- Using a flashlight, laser pointer, or other bright light
By following these tips, you can help prevent conflicts with coyotes and keep yourself, your family, and your pets safe.

VOLUNTEER AND DONATE LOCALLY
How you can help!
Occupying the northeast corner of Washington Blvd and Los Robles, just across the street from our border, Friends In Deed, has been providing basic services to homeless and at-risk neighbors for more than 125 years. Its mission is to “ensure that individuals in need are safe, fed, and hopeful for their futures.” It is for good reason that Friends In Deed was awarded the 2021 California Nonprofit of the Year.
Friends In Deed depends on dedicated volunteers. Since Friends in Deed is only a short walk from our homes, volunteering there is very convenient! What a great way to kick off the New Year by helping neighbors going through a rough patch.
Currently, there are several ways you can help:
- THE FOOD PANTRY
- Duties include prepping for food distribution, bagging fresh produce, unloading food donations, restocking shelves, etc.
- To volunteer contact timn@friendsindeedpas.org.
- THE WOMEN'S ROOM (TWR)
- Dedicated to serving women who are homeless, the program provides supportive services and basic needs: showers, laundry, and healthy food. The facility also provides access to computers and phones, arts and crafts, field trips, fresh clothing, "and a place to socialize and build community.”
- To volunteer contact lindseyr@friendsindeedpas.org or janea@friendsindeedpas.org.
- Another way to help TWR is to purchase items on the TWR Amazon Donation Wish List HERE.
