March 2023

Welcome to the latest news from the In The Field blog. The significance of the spread of coronaviruses as camels move between different countries and regions is understudied according to molecular geneticist Sheila Ommeh Cecily, winner of the Top Female Researcher award from Kenya Education Network (KENET). And RNP, the Brazilian NREN, was challenged when devastating rains hit the city of Petrópolis, home to one of the largest supercomputers in Latin America. Following one extremely hectic week, operations could resume. In Europe, climate scientists in the Nordic countries are benefiting from a European Open Science Cloud project. Enjoy!

FEATURED STORIES

How coronaviruses have affected camel herding

Since camels often move between different countries and regions, controlling diseases such as coronaviruses calls for a transboundary approach involving enhanced surveillance and precise diagnostics. This is a key conclusion in works by molecular geneticist Sheila Ommeh Cecily, winner of the Top Female Researcher award instituted by Kenya Education Network (KENET).

ICYMI: When winter turns to spring

The transition from winter, when everything is dormant, to spring is known as “the green wave”. While the wave does come every year, climate change and other phenomena cause variations regarding the specific dates, speed, and geographical profile. Software developed in the Netherlands and computing provided by NREN SURF enable large-scale studies.

ICYMI: Cloud services mitigate data losses in Ukraine

After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, research and education institutions in Ukraine increased their demand for virtual services exponentially to secure their valuable data. This did create an overload at URAN (Ukraine’s NREN) but these issues have been overcome through a dedicated effort.

Tackling breakdowns caused by heavy rain in Brazil

Even supercomputers are helpless when their surrounding optical telecommunications break down because of heavy rain. RNP, the national research and education network (NREN) of Brazil, and partners managed to reestablish normal operation within a week after unprecedented rains hit Petrópolis.

Nordic climate researchers are stronger together

For the climate research community in the European Nordic countries, both the modelling and the experiments – claiming huge computational resources – there's a huge benefit from participation in a European open science project - the Nordic leg of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC-Nordic).

ICYMI: Snapshots of molecular reactions

A new technique developed in a US science collaboration allows researchers to follow the extremely fast events during chemical reactions. For instance, the technique will allow new insight into the mechanism by which plants perform photosynthesis. ESnet provided the necessary data transfer.
