Meet the Senator - Beatriz Gutierrez-Malagon

Beatriz Suzette Gutiérrez-Malagón, known as Bea, is a Latina first-generation college graduate from Florida. She got her degrees in Criminology and International Affairs (B.S.) and Higher Education Student Affairs (M.S.) from Florida State University. While at FSU she led a variety of service initiatives in North Florida, served in the Greek life community, obtained a leadership studies certificate, facilitated programming, and advocated for womxn's health. Since moving to Maryland in the fall of 2019, she started her career at UMBC as Coordinator for Leadership. In this role, she also serves as SGA Co-Advisor and is the Circle Advisor for the leadership honor society OΔK. A huge believer in the idea that everyone has the capacity to be a leader and that leadership is relational at its core, Bea promotes these ideals through her work in Campus Life and beyond. Alongside Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion & Belonging (i3b), she has been co-creating and co-facilitating the Multicultural Leadership Experience. She values education, leadership development, and guiding students to be their most authentic selves. In her spare time, she likes to rollerskate. And she is a furmom of four— two husky/shepherd mixes and two kitty cats!
