An Invitation to Holy Week

The opening of the Christmas Lessons and Carols features an invitation “to hear again the message of the angels.” There is a formal invitation to the observance of a holy Lent during Ash Wednesday “to renew our repentance and faith.” Yet, there is no such welcome or greeting to Holy Week and the stories that serve as the heart of our faith. Instead, we rush the process and start a service with Palm Sunday and read the crucifixion by the end. There is no lingering to hear the message or renewing our faith.  And still, these stories account for fully one-third of each gospel. Come and learn from these powerful services. Come and go deeper in your faith. Come and see the offering of Christ for the world. Here is a feeble attempt to write such an invitation.

Dear People of God: Together we enter into Holy Week, the most sacred season of our church year. We recall the stories of love and hope, of communion and connection, of denial and betrayal, of death and life. Each day we travel deeper into the mystery of the offering of Jesus on behalf of the world. Help us, Lord, to walk this difficult path with you. Help us to hear listen and learn from your life among us. Help us to stand watch and pray as the darkness gathers. As we travel this path to Calvary, keep us focused on your gift of love so that we might better know you and celebrate your Easter victory.

We hope to see you at our Palm Sunday Potluck Brunch in Inglett Hall at 9:00 AM!
