Opting out of CAASPP Testing

Students with dyslexia tend to find state testing exhausting, frustrating, and stressful, even with accommodations. (Extended time = CAASPP never ends!) Send this message to your school’s principal to respectfully opt your child out of state testing. More info on opting out here on the CA Teachers Association website.

My Tours of New Schools

For more info on why Leveled Readers/Reading Recovery aren’t science-based approaches, listen to the viral podcast “Sold a Story.” Emily Hanford interviews children & adults who struggle with reading and does an outstanding job illustrating the damage done by whole-language approaches. The only local school I know of that uses an evidence-based approach in K-2 is Sacramento Country Day, which uses Fundations. If you know of others, PLEASE let me know!
