The Rev. Jane Rogers Wilson, "Janey," to join Diocesan Staff

March 27, 2023

The Rt. Rev. Daniel Richards has called the Rev. Janey Wilson, Rector of the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour in Rock Hill, to join the Diocesan staff as Archdeacon, effective June 1, 2023.

“In seeking to round out the staff with gifts and strengths that complement existing staff and me, I have asked the Rev. Janey Wilson to serve as Archdeacon for the Diocese of Upper South Carolina. Her love for congregations and her deep sense of peace in Christ have been evident in our conversations and her career, even before her successful term as rector of Our Savior, Rock Hill. She brings experience at the diocesan and parish level, the respect of her colleagues, and a delight in ministry that is a joy to watch,” said Bishop Richards.

Archdeacon Wilson’s primary areas of ministry in the diocese will be congregational health, helping to oversee the implementation of the programs in place and congregations in transition, helping to navigate them from the leaving of one priest in charge to the calling of another in concert with the Canon to the Ordinary helping to navigate clergy in transition, and the care of missions, working with the Commissions of the Diocese, especially the Commission for Congregations.

The title of Archdeacon brings with it a special role in the relationship of the Bishop and the community of Deacons, assisting in the calling of their school and their formation.

“I am deeply honored that Bishop Daniel has invited me to join his staff. Having served on a diocesan staff early in my ministry, it is a blessing to come full circle. Although I am sad to leave Our Saviour, which has nurtured a remarkable rector and parish relationship, I look forward with great joy to beginning my work with the other wonderful churches across our diocese,” said Archdeacon Wilson.

Archdeacon Wilson became the 11th Rector of the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour on November 4, 2018. She previously served as Rector/Vicar of two Episcopal churches in Tarboro, North Carolina. While serving there, she was elected to be a member of the Diocesan Standing Committee, serving as President of the Standing Committee during a time of transition as The Rt. Rev. Michael B. Curry became Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church. She has also served as a Trustee of the University of the South, Sewanee.

Archdeacon Wilson began her professional career as a Librarian and Instructor at Berea College in Berea, Kentucky. She holds a BA degree in English and a Master’s in American History and Library Science. During her time at Berea College, she was called to the priesthood, graduating with an Anglican Studies Certificate from Seabury Western Theological Seminary in 2006 and earning a Master of Divinity from Lexington Theological Seminary in 2008. She also holds a Certificate in Clinical Pastoral Education. In addition, Janey has extensive experience with College Ministry at Christ Church Cathedral in Lexington. She began her ministry on Diocesan Staff as a Canon Missioner and then Director of the Small Church Ministry Consortium in the Episcopal Diocese of Lexington.

In the Diocese of Upper South Carolina, she has served as Dean of the Catawba Convocation, President of the Ecclesiastical Disciplinary Board, and as a member of the Credentials Committee during the recent Episcopal Election. She is currently serving on the Commission for Congregations and the Diocesan Executive Council as a member of the Standing Committee. She has also joyfully served as Spiritual Director at Camp Gravatt for both Vocare and Happening.

Janey and her husband, Shannon, an archivist and historian, are the parents of three grown sons, one of whom recently graduated from Sewanee. They are the very proud grandparents of Walker, Hensley, and Ruby and devoted servant leaders to two much-loved dogs.

Archdeacon Wilson’s official title will be The Venerable Jane Rogers Wilson, and her office will be located at the Diocesan House in Columbia.
