The Sidney S. McIntyre, Sr. Scholarship Fund, formerly administered by the Seattle Foundation, has come home to Skagit County. The Scholarship Fund, established in 1986 by Jack and Shirley McIntyre to honor Jack's father, the late Sidney S. McIntyre Sr., a civic and community leader in Sedro-Woolley.
Sidney McIntyre, Sr. served as a Sedro-Woolley School Board Member, City Councilman, and civic leader. He founded Skagit Steel & Iron Works, later known as Skagit Corporation, a major employer for decades.
He passed away in Sedro-Woolley in 1972 at the age of seventy-nine years old. The fund is a testament to the McIntyre Family’s legacy and dedication to education and creating opportunities for local youth. Since 1986, 131 students have been awarded scholarships, with a 95% graduation rate. There are currently 10 students within the Sidney S. McIntyre, Sr. Memorial Scholarship program.
The Scholarship Fund was created to help young people develop skills in order to serve their communities. Graduating seniors from any high school in Skagit County, preferably from Sedro-Woolley, are eligible to apply.
The scholarship provides full tuition, room and board (after other financial aid and scholarships have been factored in) to any public Washington State higher educational institution and is renewable each year, for four years.
“It’s been a privilege to serve the Skagit Valley community providing opportunities for student to achieve their educational goals for 37 years. In turn it’s been rewarding for our family, who’s now expanded to three generations of partnering with the community.” – The McIntyre Family
The Skagit Community Foundation will begin administration and interviewing the 2023 applicants with the Scholarship’s Committee this month.
