The Honorable Dessima Williams meets with student groups at Georgetown
Ambassador Williams Meets with the Caribbean Cultural Circle
Last week, the Caribbean Culture Circle and the Center for Latin American Studies hosted The Honorable Dessima Williams in conversation about her experience advocating for the Caribbean on the international stage. Members of Georgetown’s undergraduate community were able to ask Ambassador Williams questions surrounding the political and economic futures of the region as well as learn how to ensure Carribbean voices are represented in global forums. Overall the discussion was engaging and inspiring. The event was a fantastic way for the Carribean student community to hear from the first Visiting Distinguished Professor of Global Perspectives.

Ambassador Williams Meets with Latin American Foreign Affairs Association
Last Wednesday, March 22nd, LAFAA hosted a conversation with The Honorable Ambassador Dessima Williams to discuss with students her career in diplomacy. Students who attended were able to ask Ambassador Williams questions regarding polarization and multilateralism, representation of developing countries in multinational bodies and lessons learned throughout her career. Ambassador Williams emphasized the role social justice has played in her career and the importance of building trust and fostering relationships in diplomacy. The event was an incredible opportunity for Georgetown students to directly engage with the first Visiting Distinguished Professor of Global Perspectives.

Venezuela is suffering one of the worst humanitarian crises in the history of the Western Hemisphere, conditions that have spurred the exodus of over 7 million Venezuelans over the last decade. Yet despite the intensity and duration of the crisis, the flow of aid to Venezuela is woefully inadequate.
Between January and November 2022, the Wilson Center’s Latin American Program convened a Humanitarian Working Group with representatives of prominent Venezuelan NGOs to identify barriers to aid delivery. In a new report summarizing the working group’s conclusions, Michael Penfold and Cynthia J. Arnson identify the principle obstacle as the unwillingness of Nicolás Maduro to relinquish control over aid deliveries or allow sufficient assistance to enter the country. They also find that, even though international sanctions on Venezuela include exemptions for humanitarian and civil society organizations, over-compliance has seriously limited the operations of non-profit organizations, by curbing the willingness of donors to assume the risks associated with the disbursement of funds in Venezuela. Meanwhile, political and administrative obstacles continue to impede a humanitarian accord reached last year, while legislation proposed by the Venezuelan government would deepen control over civil society organizations.

 Corruption, Accountability and Democracy in Brazil: Challenges and Solutions

Since President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took office on January 1, he has promised to increase government transparency and address corruption and other threats to democracy. The Office of Comptroller General of Brazil, led by Minister Vinícius Marques de Carvalho, is on the front lines of those battles. Among its responsibilities are controlling public corruption and coordinating the release of documents related to the January 8 assault on Brazil’s presidential palace, Congress and Supreme Court.
To discuss his priorities, Dr. Marques de Carvalho will visit the Wilson Center’s Brazil Institute on Monday, April 3, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. (ET). Please join us for an in-person conversation on Brazil’s efforts to curb corruption and strengthen its democracy.

The multilateral development banks are in the spotlight as countries struggle to address multiple crises, setbacks in poverty reduction, and global climate and health challenges. Shareholders and the broader international community are calling for a system-wide reform of MDBs to help them assist countries in tackling these challenges.
Ilan Goldfajn was elected president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) in November 2022, as Latin America grappled with low growth and serious social strains, pressures which have continued. He brings extensive public finance and private sector experience to the position. Amanda Glassman, Liliana Rojas-Suarez, and Nancy Lee from the Center for Global Development will engage with President Goldfajn to discuss his vision for the IDB and its role in addressing the challenges confronting Latin America and the Caribbean.

Seeking Truth: The Challenges and Achievements of Colombia’s Truth Commission

In 2016 the Colombian government signed a historic peace accord with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerillas, ending half a century of conflict. As part of the agreement, Colombia created a Commission for the Clarification of Truth, Coexistence, and Non-Repetition, charged with investigating and clarifying major human rights violations and shedding light on the causes and origins of the conflict. Rev. Francisco De Roux, S.J., led a group of 11 commissioners and a staff of 3,000 in compiling the commission’s final report, presented in the summer of 2022.
The Georgetown Americas Institute and the Keough School of Global Affairs at the University of Notre Dame are pleased to welcome Rev. Francisco De Roux to talk about his experience as chair of the commission; the findings, challenges, and successes during his five years leading the effort; and his personal reflections on the role of truth commissions in countries torn by conflict. The conversation with Rev. De Roux will be moderated by Georgetown Americas Institute Managing Director Denisse Yanovich and Founding Director Alejandro Werner.

American Literary Translator Association, Call for Fellowship Submissions
Deadline: April 17, 2023
The ALTA Travel Fellowships, which are awarded annually to emerging translators to help them participate in ALTA programming, are open for submissions. Applications this year are open until April 17 at 11:59pm PT via Submittable only. This year, ALTA Travel Fellows will be awarded a monetary prize and will participate in a reading at the ALTA conference in Tucson, AZ in the fall.
For the ALTA Travel Fellowships, an emerging translator is defined as someone who does not yet have a book-length work of translation published or under contract. ALTA considers chapbooks to be book-length publications for the Travel Fellowships. The ALTA Travel Fellowships are open to individual translators (not teams of co-translators).
Among the fellowships is the Peter K. Jansen Memorial Travel Fellowship, which is preferentially awarded to an emerging translator of color or a translator working from an underrepresented diaspora or stateless language. Applicants for the Jansen Fellowship should apply using the ALTA Travel Fellowship application, and check the Jansen Fellowship eligibility box in the application form.

The Latin America program analyzes the dynamic relationships between the United States and the nations in the Western Hemisphere. Current projects address the causes and effects of widespread phenomena such as democratization, globalization, migration, and economic development on domestic politics, foreign relations, and transnational ties within the Western Hemisphere.
