Growing our understanding of youth experiencing homelessness and how to prevent negative childhood experiences from defining our students' potential into adulthood is  an essential input to our work at Chicago HOPES for Kids.  A new study, Late Adolescent Predictors of Homelessness and Food Insecurity During Emerging Adulthood (Tucker JS, Davis JP, Perez LG, Klein DJ, D'amico EJ. Journal of Adolescent Heath. May 2022), identifies factors during adolescence that predict homelessness five years later.

We are officially half way through the spring semester! Time is really flying by these days! As students coast into spring break, our Ready Readers program will be hosting our second year of Spring Break Mini Camp with one of our sites. While others may be taking the week off, we are getting in some extra hours of literacy and fun with some of our participants.

The Connection Between Foster Care and Homelessness (and what can be done to weaken it)

With an annual increase in homelessness throughout the United States, one statistic must be discussed more: of the U.S.’s homeless population, 50% have spent time in foster care, according to the National Foster Youth Institute. If we as a nation are committed to fighting homelessness, we must take this statistic into account and figure out what changes need to be made to the foster care system to decrease its impact on homelessness.

We Have Started Our Spring 2023 Program!

We are almost halfway through out spring semester! We've enjoyed reading, engaging in creative games, and have had a few enrichment partners stop by to share their talents with our students - including Nico from Juicebox! Check out some of the amazing projects the kiddos have made so far!

How You Can Support Us! 

Our program supports more than 350 students and families , many of whom struggle to meet their basic needs, including food. You can provide nutritious snacks to students during our program by making a snack donation today.

Registration for the 2023 Bank of America Chicago Marathon IS NOW OPEN! The minimum fundraising requirement is $1,750. Your entrance fee will be reimbursed once you hit your fundraising goal! Only a few spots left! For more information, reach out to

Volunteer with Us!

We ask that volunteers commit to a minimum of one semester, two hours per week, at one of our partner shelters across our eight neighborhoods (Rogers Park, Uptown, North Lawndale, Austin, Englewood, Lakeview, South Shore, South Loop and Grand Crossing). Spanish speakers are highly encouraged to volunteer with us!
