Dear greater Ann Arbor Jewish community,

Yesterday, we witnessed the culmination of one of the most tumultuous 24-hour periods in Israel’s history. Like many of you, we at the Jewish Federation of Greater Ann Arbor have been watching the unprecedented protests, strikes, and outrage in Israel over the proposed judicial reform. On Monday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced a suspension of the judicial overhaul until after the Knesset's Passover recess. This Israel Status Update from our parent organization, the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA), provides an excellent overview what occurred.

Our local Federation, through JFNA, is in daily contact with our colleagues and leaders on the ground to express support and solidarity. In case you missed it, you can read here about 30 leaders from Jewish Federations across North America who flew in to Israel a couple weeks ago to advocate against the proposed legislation.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Ann Arbor continues to monitor the news, as this is still an unfolding situation. We will provide more information as developments occur. In the meantime, here is a helpful analysis by Times of Israel senior analyst, Haviv Rettig Gur, written before yesterday's announcement that the legislation would be delayed.

We also invite you to join us and the Hebrew Day School of Ann Arbor for a Zoom program this Thursday evening, 3/30 at 7pm called Understanding Israel: An Educational Session to Unpack Recent Events. Led by HDS parent and constitutional law professor Richard Primus, who has lived in Israel, this program will explore the proposed changes to Israel's legal system, the pressures being brought to support and challenge these changes, and how the American Constitution differs from the Israeli legal system. This program is intended for adults, but children are welcome. Registration is required here.

We pray that the situation remains peaceful, and we support our brothers and sisters in Israel as they work to uphold Israel’s Jewish and democratic values.

L'Shalom,

Eileen Freed
