Recently we received some feedback from one of our library users who commented on how lovely the library space and staff were but had to be the noisiest library they had ever visited. They happened to be in the library when SciTech was in town, so the library had been noisy with the delightful, excited sounds of very young children. Rather than taking the comment as a criticism the observation beautifully underscored the shifting landscape of the public library environment.
Gone are the days of having to tiptoe quietly and library staff ‘shushing’ patrons, which is hardly welcoming for people with small children; it’s now a multilayered, dynamic community hub that offers quiet spaces, energetic collaborations, diverse collections reflective of the community, and inclusive programs and events. What a wonderful evolution.
In keeping with the vibrant energy of the library space, we have a fabulous range of activities for our juniors in our ‘Story Playground’ during the school holidays. Book early to avoid disappointment. For adults we have a range of events and activities on offer including writing workshops and community safety sessions, leading into activities supporting the WA Tree Festival.
Everyone is welcome, whether a library member or not, so please spread the word and encourage your friends, who still think the library is a ‘shush’ place, to visit and engage.
Until next month,
Stay safe (especially on the roads if travelling) and keep reading
