183A Phase III Update: We’re Halfway There
Progress on the 183A Phase III Project continues to move at a rapid pace and we’re happy to report that we’re roughly halfway through construction.
In late February, the project implemented a successful traffic shift along SH 29 at the intersection of US 183 to accommodate excavation and construction of a new bridge. This effort requires significant earthwork with more than 230,000 cubic yards of dirt that will be removed and reused elsewhere on the project. When complete, the new bridge will carry SH 29 vehicular traffic and pedestrian crossings, all of which will remain at grade, over the new 183A toll lanes.
Construction north of SH 29 has also picked up. Project improvements at this location include a new alignment of US 183, reconstruction of a portion of CR 213/CR 258, and dedicated right turn lanes from US 183 onto CR 213/CR 258.
Construction on the project is not a simple as it may appear from the roadway. Many large structures involve smaller components. For example, before concrete can be poured, rebar must be tied down to support and strengthen the eventual structure. The project includes 17 bridges and several retaining walls to carry the new 183A toll lanes over and under existing intersections. It’s a great deal of work, but our field crews have made significant progress in the two years since construction began.
