Dear Maynard Family,

This newsletter is packed with curated headlines across Fault Lines, particularly addressing issues of race and gender, as they apply to journalists, newsroom collaboration and coverage.

We want to highlight two articles (linked below) that feature Maynard Family members:

  • Maynard 200 alum Michelle Faust Raghavan has joined the new advisory board at U.S. Democracy Day.
  • Maynard 200 alums Penda Howell and D. Kevin McNeir penned an article about Maynard Institute co-founder Dorothy Butler Gilliam and her impact on the journalism industry.

As a reminder, there are only a few days left to apply to the Maynard 200 fellowship and the Oakland Voices community journalism program. Join this powerful Maynard Institute network. The impact on your career could be life changing. Check out more details below.

With gratitude,

Evelyn Hsu and Martin G. Reynolds

Racial equity news coverage of Latinos is lacking, a new study finds
By Edwin Flores

"Latinos are barely part of the conversation in newspapers and online media outlets covering the issue of racial equity and racism, a new study has found. Only about 6% of such news referred to Latinos, who make up nearly 20% of the American population and over 40% of all people of color, according to a report published Wednesday by the Berkeley Media Studies Group and UnidosUS." Read the article and full research report.

Exposé of Women’s Workplace Experiences Challenges Antiracist Leaders to Step Up

New research finds that "51% of women from marginalized racial and ethnic groups in Australia, Canada, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States experience racism in the workplace." Plus, women who are marginalized based on colorism, texturism, cissexism, and/or heterosexism were more likely to experience racism than their counterparts. Learn more.

Racism is ‘commonplace’ in UK journalism with more senior Black staff needed across industry, report warns
By Nadine White

"The report said the proportion of Black journalists had increased in recent years and there had also been a heightened sense of the possibility for change since 2020 with the increased momentum of the Black Lives Matter movement. However, Black journalists said that newsroom processes continued to be exclusionary and discrimination is rife." Read more.

Journalism and Identity: Bilingual Journalists Face Translation Burden
By Anmol Irfan

“The identity work that comes with presenting stories to the world that are silenced again and again is already exhausting. Having to bear the burden of over-explaining just because English readers aren’t expected to educate themselves about other cultures can also impact journalists’ mental health.” Read more.

Instead of addressing the lack of diversity, Roger Goodell and NFL Media got rid of Jim Trotter for asking about it
By Carron J. Phillips

“For the last two years, veteran NFL reporter Jim Trotter has held Roger Goodell accountable by asking him tough — but fair — questions about the league’s lack of diversity amongst coaches, front offices, and within the NFL Media Group at the Commissioner’s annual televised press conference at the Super Bowl.” Read more.

A salute to Dorothy Butler Gilliam, first Black woman reporter at The Washington Post
By D. Kevin McNeir

"Her lifelong passion and a distinguishing characteristic of her career would be improving newsroom diversity. One example was a volunteer project which she founded in 1977 to train minority journalists with eight other colleagues. The project soon progressed into the vibrant Robert Maynard Institute for Journalism Education, where she served as board chair from 1985-1992." Read more.

U.S. Democracy Day welcomes new advisory board for 2023 collaboration
By Joe Amditis

"Pro-democracy journalism collaborations like Democracy Day are critical because they play a crucial role in keeping the public informed and engaged in democratic processes.
