The Power of Cultural Humility and Apologizing
Humility is not mentioned explicitly in the eight principles of Unitarian Universalism. Yet, humility is central to many faith traditions in which we are grounded, as well as the faith traditions some of us continue to practice in addition to Unitarian Universalism. Cultural humility, in particular, is essential to our commitment to becoming a more diverse and inclusive community. But it asks us to be vulnerable, and to apologize often and sincerely. So, how can practicing cultural humility also be powerful? Lata addresses this question, drawing from her own experiences as a Hindu-Unitarian Universalist.

Looking Ahead in Worship
April 2, 2023
Rev. Rod Richards
Worship Associate: Alison Rittger
The Path of Least Resistance
It's a little hard to welcome our monthly theme--The Path of Resistance--when many of us are used to searching out the path of least resistance.
*Reminder: Today, Rev. Rod meets in the Social Hall at noon with those interested in what it means to be a UU in this congregation. And Rev. Rod will meet at noon on Zoom on the 2nd Sunday of April. Everyone invited!
See What You Missed
If you missed the Next Steps congregational meeting with Rachell Maxwell of Stewardship for Us last Sunday, or you want to see the slides up close, it was recorded and may be viewed here: https://uuslo.org/next-steps-congregational-meeting.
All Women Welcome
to the Ladies of the Evening Potluck
All women are welcome to the next Ladies of the Evening potluck on Tuesday, March 28 in the UU social hall. Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 6 p.m. and after dinner sharing which ends by 7:30 or 8 pm. Please text or phone Rosemary Lucier at 805-801-3867 to let her know what food or beverage you will bring. Judith Bernstein and I look forward to seeing you! If you haven't joined us before, give us a try. It's a welcoming, relaxing, and informative evening. Rosemary
Yes, another great concert is on its way! Local classical pianist Jack Artusio will perform a one-hour program of works by Haydn, Beethoven, Debussy, and Rachmaninoff on Sunday, April 16.
This time the concert will begin at 12:30 pm as a kind of “brown bag concert.” Attendees are invited to bring a sandwich lunch to enjoy in the social hall before returning to the sanctuary for the concert.
The concert is a fundraiser for UUSLO. The suggested donation is $10 per adult.
Jack Artusio moved to the Central Coast in 1974. He performed in the first two Paderwerski Festivals in Paso Robles in the mid '80s, and has continued giving recitals since then. In the early '90s he began playing in the Unitarian Universalist services when we were a Fellowship meeting on Foothill Blvd.
UU Meditation Mondays
You’re invited to UU Meditation Monday Afternoon.
Sit with Alison and friends from 4 to 4:30.
First is a 10-minute guided meditation
Followed by a 20-minute silent meditation.
Join in this zoom room: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/6882507919
The room will open at 3:45 for questions and/or conversation.
Our next meeting is April 13th at 2:30 via Zoom.
Topic: Church? vs. Fellowship?:
What is the difference? Which is our UU? How do we explain to someone what a Unitarian is or what it is to be a Unitarian?
All women are welcome.
The WDG meets via Zoom (most meetings) at 2:30 on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of most months. Contact Wendy ( wendygault@gmail.com) if you would like to join in.
Lit Wits to Explore THINK AGAIN in April
& THE STREET LAWYER in May
We will be discussing THINK AGAIN by Adam Grant for our meeting on Tuesday, April 4 at 6pm. It’s about the Power of Knowing What You Don’t Know. Imagine for a moment how you would feel if you were able to change the way you think and learn, so that you could move on, adapt, take risks and win again. It is challenging to examine how you arrive at your beliefs, ideas, etc.
Our novel for 6pm on Monday, May 8 (a change for this month), is THE STREET LAWYER by John Grisham. A homeless man takes nine lawyers hostage in the firm’s plush offices. When it is all over, the man’s blood is splattered on the face of Michael Brock - and suddenly Michael is willing to do the unthinkable, rediscovering a conscience he lost long ago. Michael is leaving the big time for the streets where his attacker once lived and where society’s powerlessness needs an advocate for justice. We continue ZOOM meetings for Lit Wits. To join us go to https://us02web.us/j/81618487257
If you have any questions, you can email me - janclarke@charter.net. or Mary Parker - mnparker539@gmail.com
Hope to see you there.

One Day Fast between April 2 & 8
Join Douglas and Jan and fast for at least one day between April 2-8. Why? To show solidarity with 84 men who are on a hunger strike right now at Mesa Verde (Bakersfield) and Golden State (McFarland) detention centers, both of which are run by private for-profit prisons. Men detained there began a labor strike several months ago to protest the $1 per day wages they receive for cleaning, cooking, etc. It turned into a hunger strike recently to protest dehumanizing and unjust conditions and treatment by guards.
The Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity (IM4HI), requests that we get involved. They are finding at least 84 people willing to fast in solidarity for one or more days between April 2 and 8. This week was chosen because it is the holiest time for Christians and is the holy time of Ramadan for Muslims. Douglas and Jan plan to fast on April 4. Want to join them?
Since the strike began, at least seven leaders in the detention centers have been violently removed by ICE officers and GEO staff and transferred to El Paso, TX for forced feeding. They were returned to Mesa Verde a few days later. The hunger strikers are traumatized from the attack but are resolved to forge ahead. They are calling on the outside community to stand in solidarity with them and to help elevate their demands to elected and ICE officials.
This is a moment to mobilize and show people who are detained that they are not alone! There are several ways to get involved - please read on to learn about ways you can be in solidarity. Learn more and join the hunger fast at bit.ly/MultifaithSolidarityFast
Contact Jan if you are interested in the visits she facilitates almost monthly to Bakersfield and McFarland. You will meet amazing people who have almost no rights and feel very isolated.

Benefit Concert and Art Show for
San Luis Obispo United Methodist Church
Following a devastating fire on Easter Sunday 2001, the church rebuilt its building, celebrating re-opening on Easter Sunday 2008. The new church facility serves not only the congregation but is also an important community resource.
The congregation currently faces a significant financial challenge. Even though the original mortgage of $2,500,000 is now down to $1,500,000, a reset of the mortgage interest rate will soon occur. Rates have risen dramatically since the last rate adjustment and the new rate will greatly increase the monthly payments. The congregation is attempting to retire as much of the principal balance as possible to keep future monthly payments as low as possible. The goal is to raise $200,000 to truly make an impact on the amount of the monthly payments going forward. Members of the congregation are stepping up and contributing as much as they can to meet this goal. Attendees of the concert will be invited to make tax-deductible contributions, too.
April 2 at 2:30 at SLOUMC
How Can UUs Contribute? Come to the concert, enjoy the music and the art show, and please consider making your generous contribution at the event.
Be sure to designate “Building fund” on your check.

Joys, Sorrows & Concerns - 3/19/2023
VERN ISAKSON: Our household has TWO birthdays coming Saturday the 25th. First: our Siamese cat GYPSY will be 14 and is going strong. Second: Her master RON will turn 80!! --a joy & a concern.
JAN CLARKE: I was sorry to have missed last Sunday's service. I heard it was wonderful, especially seeing the new members. But I did have a wonderful weekend with family. My daughter came up for the weekend from La Crescenta, which is always special. And to make it even more special my son who lives in Paso came down to San Luis to celebrate his 60th birthday with us!
GINA WHITAKER: It is with great sorrow that we learned this morning that Ken's sister, KJ Malone, died in her sleep last night. This was completely unexpected though KJ did suffer from many physical and mental health challenges. Cards and notes welcome. Emails not so much -- they get lost
SUMNER JOYCE: Sumner is sorry to be home with a cold and to miss his clue from his Puzzle Pal this week. He is looking forward to coming back to church next week.
**********
J/S/C Instructions
Please fill out the form at https://uuslo.org/joys-sorrows and we will read your joy/sorrow/concern at the next Sunday service. Deadline is Saturday at noon for the upcoming Sunday. Submissions received after that will be read the following Sunday. Let us know on the form if you would like them printed in our Weekly NUUs. Any questions or problems with the form, please contact Jan Clarke (janclarke@charter.net). Paper forms are available at in-person worship to be filled out before the service.

Shower the People
is the recipient of the UUSLO
March Community Outreach Offering
Shower the People (STP) is a mobile shower program that provides free hot showers and new underwear and socks, toothpaste/toothbrushes and combs to the homeless in San Luis Obispo and in Grover Beach. You may have noticed STP’s big blue shower trailer in our UUSLO parking lot. We are located there every Tuesday and Thursday from 10 am – 1 pm. Last year STP provided 3,111 showers at the UUSLO alone. Across all sites, the total number of showers was 5,900. Shower needs among the homeless is great.
STP is an all-volunteer run and operated program. Our program’s goal is to have a welcoming, safe, clean and reliable site for folks to shower. STP provides showers rain or shine and on all holidays. You might recognize some of our volunteers from UUSLO: Dave Bernhardt, Steve Brown, Douglas Pillsbury, Beth Hirsch, Kathy Sallaz and myself, Gwen Watkins.
Volunteering your time at the showers is interesting, meaningful, and fun. We would love to have you drop by and check us out. Or, you can always talk to our UUSLO volunteers to learn more about our shower program. Our website is: showerthepeopleslo.org. Feel free to email me with your questions.
