Hospitals & Health Systems More Than Earn Their Tax Exemption

Every single hospital and health system provides benefits to their communities that far outstrip any other sector in health care. What commercial health plan or drug or medical device company ever responded to a heart attack, car accident, or child’s midnight fever with open doors and compassionate care? But that is what hospitals do every day. Some hospitals are exempt from federal and some state and local taxes. For that privilege, they dutifully publicly report the range of benefits and services they provide to their communities, one of which is financial assistance for those in need. The reports hospitals file every year with the IRS both counts and describes these benefits.

Long-Term Care Hospital Provider Preview Reports

The updated Long-Term Care Hospital (LTCH) Provider Preview Reports can be accessed on Care Compare and Provider Data Catalog. These reports include provider performance scores for quality measures, which will be updated during the June 2023 refresh. The Preview Reports contain data based on quality assessment data, Centers for Disease Control measures, and claims based measures collected from LTCHs during the applicable time frames. Providers can review their performance data until April 14, 2023. Providers can request Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services review of their data during the preview period.

U.S. Maternal Mortality Hits 58-Year High

The rate of maternal deaths during or shortly after pregnancy rose 40 percent in 2021, making the U.S. the most dangerous place among high-income countries to give birth. The maternal mortality rate rose to 33 deaths per 100,000 live births, the highest since 1965. It continues an upward trend, with 20 deaths per 100,000 in 2019 and 24 in 2020, according to CDC data. The COVID-19 pandemic added to factors contributing to maternal deaths, including health care disparities and delays in preventive care.

OSSE Needs Judges for Competitive Events, March 23-24
The Career and Technical Education (CTE) department at the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) is hosting its 2023 DC Career and Technical Student Organization State Leadership Conference, March 23-24 at the Kellogg Conference Hotel at Gallaudet University. The event that will host 200+ CTE students and staff and includes numerous competitions for students. OSSE-CTE is looking for volunteer judges for the student competitive events on March 23 between 10 am - 2:30 pm and between 10 am - 1 pm on March 24 in the areas of health science/biotechnology, sports medicine, physical therapy, CPR/first-aid, and other health-related professional skills.

Calling all health care professionals for DCHA’s Patient Safety and Quality Poster Competition. The Patient Safety & Quality Poster Competition is organized to encourage hospitals and health care providers to present their original work. All winning abstracts will be presented during the annual Patient Safety & Quality Summit on November 14, 2023. The purpose of the competition is to emphasize quality improvement methodology, provide a venue to share innovative and effective educational programs, showcase unique community projects, and encourage networking among medical peers with similar interests. Complete your poster submissions by June 30, 2023.
