Dä̀nnchʼe is a Southern Tutchone greeting. Thank you for signing up to receive newsletter updates. This newsletter is meant to provide subscribers with project updates, to announce milestones when achieved, and to maintain a line of communication with community.

CYFN has selected an interim name for the shelter while the engagement process continues for the selection of the permanent shelter name. In the interim, the CYFN shelter will be referred to as the Family Preservation Wellness Centre.

 Family Preservation Wellness Centre Director Introduction 

CYFN is excited to announce that Shandell McCarthy has been hired as the Director of Family Preservation Wellness Centre. Please read below to learn about Shandell:

Shandell McCarthy; J.D., B.Ed
Shandell is a proud member and beneficiary of the Teslin Tlingit Council and member of the Deshitaan (Split-tail Beaver) & Crow Clans. Shandell was born and mostly raised in Whitehorse, Yukon where she continues to live and reside with her 3 children & granddaughter. Shandell graduated from Yukon College in 2003 with an undergraduate degree in elementary education conferred by the University of Regina. She also obtained a Juris Doctor from the Peter A. Allard School of Law at the University of British Columbia in May 2017. Shandell was called to the Yukon Bar in 2018 and to the Alberta Bar in 2022. Shandell has worked with Yukon First Nations in a variety of capacities for over 11 years and has sat on several boards and committees as member, co-chair and as chair. Shandell worked as a Federal and Crown Prosecutor for the past 5 years where she specialized in domestic violence files. She is pleased to be able to bring her wide range of experiences to the position and is excited for what is to come.

 Project Status Update 

The development permit was approved by the City of Whitehorse, and the design team continues to work through the building permit approvals process. The tender closes this month, and CYFN will select a contractor to begin construction this spring. Funding agreements are being finalized, including agreements with the federal government, CMHC, and City of Whitehorse.

 Project Timeline 

 General Contractor Tender Update 

The tender closes on March 21, 2023. The bid evaluation process will happen at the end of this month, with a contractor being selected for construction.

 Doing Our Work in a Good Way 

CYFN has been working working with local Elders and Knowledge Keepers from various Yukon First Nations to integrate cultural and ceremonial practices into the project and site of the Family Preservation Wellness Centre.

 Upcoming Events 

CYFN is planning various events at the Family Preservation Wellness Centre site, which will occur before construction starts. A private ceremony will be held on the site at the end of March, with other public events planned for in April.
