JOURNAL - #WEEK 12

Wednesday 22nd March

Hello from London! The subject of money in the context of creativity is always a tricky one without straightforward answers. Some creatives can be more money-driven than the bankers on the trading floor. Others even struggle to format an invoice, let alone chase a late payment. Most of us are hovering somewhere in the middle of the spectrum with the simple aim of creating honest work and getting paid well enough to warrant a steady future. The key, if possible, is to act and think like we don't need the money to make things work. Yet the current global climate challenges that daily. This week's selection takes inspiration from resilience, trauma, career growth and flipping a bird to money.

HAVE A LOOK BELOW

  1. "Money is rarely about money" is my takeaway quote from 10 Things I Wish I Knew When I Graduated College by Debbie Millman from her now classic Creative Morning talk from 2011. I must have watched this talk ten years ago, yet this simple mantra stayed with me ever since.

  2. "The ups and downs of being a human" - In this episode of On Design Podcast by Justyna Green, she hosts the remarkable storyteller and Brooklyn-based photographer Micaiah Carter known for his work with Pharell, Andreson Paak, Selena Gomez and many others.

  3. Act like you don't need the money - a page from a book, Anything you Want by Derek Sivers, sharing his philosophy on how we can conduct our business to make it more attractive whilst changing our mindset.

  4. UK charity Mind offers many useful resources on how to look after your mental health when you’re worried about money.

  5. Rani Patel on how trauma informs our creative purpose from D&AD Talks. Rani Patel is the director of cultural collaborations at the youth marketing and purpose agency, Livity.

  6. Mind Full Creative playlist is now 6 hours and 40 minutes - just a bit shy of a working day soundtrack. Well, until the next edition.

  7. This week, I wish to direct your attention to Rob Summerfield, a Berlin-based musician, who produces the most delicious lo-fi beats as Hoowie Dooin, also writes the catchiest vocal melodies as Esches or getting deeper in ambient jazz cover albums. One to watch!
