Staff Assistant - Undergraduate (Federal Work-Study and Non-Work-Study Students) 

Duke’s Asian American & Diaspora Studies Program is looking for an undergraduate Staff Assistant to provide graphic design, marketing, and social media assistance. We are seeking someone who can help with a variety of tasks, such as create original graphics for events, courses, and programming for a variety of platforms (MailChimp, Duke Event Calendar, Duke TV screens, social media); regularly post events and news to the program’s social media (Facebook, and Instagram); and assist with the program newsletter. This person may on occasion be asked to write short written pieces for the program newsletter as well. Additionally, this person should have some familiarity with event/social media photography. The ideal candidate will have solid communication skills and work independently. Ability to juggle several projects with varying priorities at once is also desirable. We are seeking applicants who can begin at the start of the fall semester, but the start date is slightly flexible. Generally, AADS undergraduate student worker positions begin at the start of the semester, summer work is occasional. Priority deadline is March 20, 2023, and the position will be open until filled.

Requirements

  • Approximately 5-7 hours/week.
  • A creative eye for publicity and media presentation
  • Knowledge of basic graphic design editing tools, especially Canva
  • Solid grasp of social media platforms
  • Creative problem solver and a willingness to contribute new ideas
  • Availability to attend staff meetings, and AADS sponsored events

Southern Memory, Southern Metaphor

This talk offers southern memory and southern metaphor as two analytics by which to engage a place-based Asian American & Diaspora Studies in the US South. In particular, Dr. Gandhi will examine how Vietnamese American cultural producers represent South Vietnam through the iconography and vernacular of the US South.

Queering Post/Colonial Cinematic Archives

This 'Gender Studies Now' series workshop brings together editors and contributors of a groundbreaking transnational, multilingual, and interdisciplinary collaboration on excavating colonial cinematic archives. Taking the publication and translation of Theorizing Colonial Cinema: Reframing Production, Circulation, and Consumption of Film in Asia (2023 Best Collected Volume Award from The Society for Cinema and Media Studies) as a point of departure, the conversation navigates possibilities and challenges of queering or decolonizing colonial archives toward ends for which they were never intended.
